The Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN) Steering Committee has elected Florence Syevuo and Nudhara Yusuf as the Co-Chairs for 2024-2025. Florence, the Executive Director of the SDGs Kenya Forum, begins the second year of a two-year term, while Nudhara, the Executive Coordinator of the Global Governance Innovation Network (GGIN), is beginning her two-year term as Co-Chair. Both were instrumental in the success of the May 2024 Civil Society Conference in Nairobi, Kenya with Nudhara serving as Co-Chair of that conference, which helped amplify civil society's voice on the global stage in the run-up to the Summit of the Future. The two will lead the coalition in implementing the new C4UN strategic plan, driving the civil society initiatives for transformative UN reforms. The plan foresees C4UN acting as a hub for Pact for the Future follow-up, increasingly engaging in thought leadership around the UN we need, and professionalizing C4UN's operations and governance for long-term sustainability. Chapter 3 of the Pact for the Future focuses on bridging the digital divide and driving sustainable development through Science, Technology, and Innovation. Key highlights include: 🔹 Enhancing North-South cooperation and technology transfer to developing nations 🔹 Promoting responsible, rights-based research and independent scientific advice for the UN 🔹 Expanding opportunities for women in STEM and addressing gender-related tech challenges 🔹 Prioritizing tech sharing to support health, food security, and education globally 🔹 Supporting climate action, workforce growth, and the needs of vulnerable groups, including Indigenous Peoples This chapter sets a critical direction for future global collaboration. Last week C4UN's Senior Advisor, Heba Aly sat down with former Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Löfven, co-chair of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism and a Member of the Club de Madrid, for the launch of the Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN)'s new conversation series, Bilateral. A few take-aways: - There are long waves in history. We're in a wave right now where politics is bringing out the worst of people, but we're going to come out of that phase eventually. - His vision is that in 50 years we have overcome the gap between North and South, and that the developed world ("or whatever we call ourselves") ... "shares in a better way." He spent a lot of time talking about how the North has to acknowledge the harm it has done to the South and invest in creating a more equal footing. - Part of the way we can achieve that is by shifting the narrative from handing out charity to investment. We may not be able to convince right-wing politicians to invest in development cooperation. But we can argue with the private sector: "If you lift poor people out of poverty, it helps the economy for everybody." - Interestingly, he seemed to suggest that US-China competition could be helpful in empowering the Global South: "Let them compete on how to make the best for the developing world." - In reaction to Mark Malloch-Brown's argument that there have to be better ways of creating change than 193 diplomats fighting over the placement of commas, Löfven agreed that you can't leave processes like the United Nations Summit of the Future to diplomats. Political leaders need to engage in building a vision of what they want to achieve. - The gamechangers he sees emerging from the Summit are reform of the global financial architecture and a real acknowledgment of the need for Security Council reform. And while the text of the agreement is blurry, "Now it's up to us to say: 'You said this in the Pact, what are we doing to take it forward?' " - People power can work. He references how Ronald Reagan, a hawk, was the one to reduce the number of nuclear warheads in the world because of public pressure: "When we as human beings comes together, express what we want (hard enough, loud enough, and often enough), some leaders actually listen." He also answers questions about the idea of a UN Parliamentary Assembly and an Article 109 review conference (that Democracy Without Borders, the UN Charter Reform Coalition and Global Governance Forum have advocated for, among others).
