🌟 Can rewards help people quit smoking, and do they work in the long term? Smoking is the leading preventable cause of ill health and early death worldwide. Quitting smoking is vitally important to help people live in good health for longer. Incentives—such as 💵 money, 🎁 vouchers, or 💳 deposits—can encourage people to quit smoking and reward them for staying smoke-free. These rewards can be offered as one-off gestures or structured plans to support sustained abstinence (known as contingency management). 📚 This updated #Cochrane systematic review analysed 48 studies with 21,924 participants. 📌 Key messages: ✅ There is high-certainty evidence that incentives significantly improve smoking cessation rates at long-term follow-ups in mixed population studies. ✅ The effect persists even after rewards have ended, suggesting lasting benefits. ✅ Rewards also help pregnant people quit smoking, with benefits continuing after the baby is born. 💡 Want to learn more? New Cochrane Review focusing on time to publication for results of clinical trials: https://lnkd.in/etBxpNAD
This Cochrane review is not going to shatter the earth, and that's the problem. We're probably immune to the finding that only half of all trials conducted end up published. But if you were to tell someone who's participating in a clinical trial that there's a 50% chance that the data they're helping to generate will not be publicly available, they would be right to question whether it's worth giving up their time at all. Publication bias doesn't just distort what we know, it devalues the effort people go to when they think they're making a difference by participating in a research study: https://lnkd.in/e7YWt69e

⚠️ How do we know if a certain treatment really works? Much health information available online is unreliable, and it’s important for everyone to develop critical thinking skills to help evaluate claims and make evidence informed decisions. We’re sharing some resources developed by Iberoamerican Cochrane Center highlighting key concepts of critical thinking in health. 👉 Key concept 8: Groups to study a particular treatment should be homogeneous
