Our awesome team have been thoroughly enjoying the latest and greatest, courtesy of the legends at Epic Games in their latest Unreal upgrade... WE LOVE MEGALIGHTS!!! Here are some of the headlines- Unreal Engine 5.5 introduces significant enhancements across various domains, including animation authoring, rendering, virtual production, and mobile game development. A standout feature in this release is MegaLights, an experimental lighting system that enables the use of numerous dynamic, shadow-casting lights with minimal performance impact. Key Features of Unreal Engine 5.5: • Animation Authoring Enhancements: The Sequencer tool now offers a more customizable interface, non-destructive animation layers, and the capability to author animatable deformers within Control Rig, which can be applied to characters in Sequencer with a single click. • Rendering Improvements: The Lumen global illumination system has been optimized to achieve 60 Hz performance on supported hardware. Additionally, the Path Tracer is now production-ready, providing high-quality rendering for final pixels in nonlinear applications and serving as a ground-truth reference. • Virtual Production Advancements: The in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) toolset has reached full production readiness, featuring support for SMPTE 2110, a production-ready Camera Calibration solver, and Virtual Scouting capabilities. • Mobile Game Development Enhancements: The Mobile Forward Renderer now supports features such as D-buffer decals, rectangular area lights, capsule shadows, movable IES textures, volumetric fog, and Niagara particle lights, all aimed at improving visual fidelity on mobile platforms. MegaLights in Unreal Engine 5.5: MegaLights is an experimental feature designed to allow developers to incorporate a vast number of dynamic, shadow-casting lights into their scenes without significant performance drawbacks. This system replaces traditional shadow maps and ray-traced shadows with a new direct lighting path, enabling the use of textured area lights with soft shadows, Light Functions, media texture playback, and volumetric shadows on both consoles and PC. A notable demonstration showcased a scene illuminated by over 1,000 shadow-casting lights running in real-time on a PlayStation 5, highlighting MegaLights’ capability to handle complex lighting scenarios efficiently. This tutorial is a good starting point...let us know how you get on! https://lnkd.in/ecNgxEUt
