Community of Hope works to improve health and end family homelessness to make Washington, DC more equitable.
About us
With hope, one can accomplish anything. Families who struggle with poverty and homelessness can achieve their goals. They can overcome challenges like having no safe place to sleep, poor health, and unemployment, and enjoy connected families with happy and healthy children. With the help of our community of donors, volunteers and partners, Community of Hope stays focused on its mission, which is to create opportunities for low-income families in Washington, DC, including those experiencing homelessness, to achieve good health, a stable home, family-sustaining income, and hope. Community of Hope has worked tirelessly for almost four decades to impact the future for low-income, homeless and underserved families in Washington, DC. Originally founded as a compassionate ministry of the Church of the Nazarene, Community of Hope was incorporated as an independently-run nonprofit organization in 1980. As the needs of our community grew, we have expanded our services across the city, with the same holistic, compassionate approach that inspired our beginnings. With a team of more than 200 compassionate staff, hundreds of volunteers, and thousands of donors, we are building a thriving organization that is caring for families, improving lives and leading change. In 2012, Community of Hope was awarded The Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement and The Washington Post. In 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018 we were selected as one of The Washington Post 150 Top Workplaces based on feedback from our staff.

We are proud to see the impact of the #SafeBabiesSafeMoms initiative, a testament to the incredible collaboration with our partner, MedStar Health. Together, we are driving positive and sustainable change in how we care for mothers and babies. The recognition of this effort in NEJM Catalyst highlights the importance of innovative, community-centered care. #MaternalHealth
Since 2020, our #SafeBabiesSafeMoms initiative has worked to create positive, sustainable change in how we care for mothers and babies. A paper published today in NEJM Catalyst shows that it’s working. Key takeaways include: 💪 Better Outcomes: Women who received prenatal care through SBSM had better outcomes in pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum health, paving the way for healthier families. 🌍 Closing the Maternal Health Disparity Gap: The program has made a tangible difference, especially for Black mothers and babies, with data showing that SBSM significantly reduced low birth weight and preterm birth rates. 🔑 A Blueprint for Success: With proven results, SBSM has the potential to be scaled regionally and nationally, creating lasting change in communities across the country. These findings offer a powerful example of how evidence-based programs and community-based interventions create pathways for greater equity in maternal and infant care. A special thanks to our partners in this work Community of Hope, Mamatoto Village, Georgetown University Health Justice Alliance, and Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy. With continued focus and investment, SBSM has the potential to transform how we care for birthing people and their babies in the DMV and across the country. Let’s continue driving innovation in maternal health. Auntonio's story is one of determination. After losing his mother at 13 and facing years of hardship, he overcame housing instability and other challenges to rebuild his life. With support from Community of Hope, Auntonio secured permanent housing, balanced two jobs, and is now pursuing joint custody of his daughters. He defines hope as “lifting others up and finding strength together.” This Giving Tuesday, you can join us in providing strength for Auntonio and others in similar circumstances. Donate today to inspire Hope In Action. 💙 #CommunityofHopeDC #GivingTuesday #DCNonprofit
