Meet Anum Haqqani, a freshman in our CGES program! Last month, the first-ever cohort of CGES students presented their accomplishments from the Fall 2024 semester to family, friends, faculty, and staff. As part of the program, students can request to be connected with fellow Red Hawks to serve as peer companions. 🤝 Together, the partners can engage in social activities around campus, like grabbing Panda Express 🥡🥢, assisting with academic accountability, and ultimately helping them build confidence in navigating college life. The Certificate in General Education Studies (CGES) program started with our first cohort this fall and is Montclair State University's first credential-granting inclusive postsecondary education program. The program empowers students to realize their potential for higher education and life. The Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HEOA) allowed for the development of college programs such as CGES to support the needs of the under-served group of individuals considered to have intellectual or developmental disabilities who are college-bound. Montclair joins over 300 US colleges and universities that offer programs for students with intellectual disability. ✉️ If you’re interested in becoming a peer companion and connecting with CGES students, email CGES@montclair.edu. #MontclairNJ #MontclairStateUniversity #EssexCountyNJ #NJEducation #DisabilityAwareness #IntellectualDisability Kathryn Leonard, LMSW

Teachers are an important part of establishing and maintaining healthy environments for children to learn and grow. Listen to Interim Dean Vincent Alfonso's feature on the American Psychological Association's Mental Health Primers Audio Series, where he shares his expertise on students experiencing sadness with Amanda Dettmer, PhD, a research scientist at Yale School of Medicine's Child Study Center.
