About us

At ComEd, we believe in being an energy partner, not just an energy provider. Being a provider means we deliver electricity to over 4 million customers across northern Illinois, which accounts for about 70 percent of the state’s population. We do so safely and reliably because we are driven by the innovation that comes from the industry expertise our employees offer. And we're committed to pursuing best-in-class performance so that our customers receive the quality service they expect and deserve. We have championed investments in technology that help shorten outages and make them less frequent, and those investments empower our customers to make smart choices about energy usage. Being a partner means we also help our customers discover new ways to save money on electric bills, while also showing how they can help the environment by decreasing their carbon footprint. We also support a range of initiatives that make a difference in people’s lives. Our commitment focuses on education, environment, arts and culture, and community development. At ComEd, #PoweringLives isn’t just a motto. It is the driving force behind everything we do. Learn more about ComEd anytime at www.ComEd.com.

The Grinch was near, but couldn't steal our holiday cheer! Our #ComEdVolunteers wrapped gifts, helped with arts and crafts, and read stories to kids at The Carole Robertson Center for Learning North Lawndale flagship site last week. We joyfully teamed up with their staff to help brighten the season for families and children in need. We're proud to spend this holiday season #PoweringLives in our local communities!

Congratulations to the city of Belvidere, home of the 160th community solar project in our service territory! Constructed on a former landfill and developed by Ameresco, this project includes 2 adjacent solar arrays on 34 acres and contains more than 9,600 solar modules with a total generation of capacity of 3.5 megawatts. With Boone County subscribing to roughly 36% of generated energy, this project will provide electricity to several county departments, including animal services, public health and public safety, in addition to a variety of commercial customers in the area. “The Belvidere project reflects the growing interest beyond the residential sector in the benefits of community solar, and the continued growth of renewables on our system,” said Gil C. Quiniones, our president and CEO. “And we are proud to partner with Ameresco in the conversion of a former landfill to contribute to the clean energy transition in northern Illinois and to the local economy.” All 160 active community solar sites in our service territory, with more to come, currently serve more than 30,000 customers. By 2030, we expect to have about 3,600 megawatts of distributed energy resources interconnected in our system, enough energy to power nearly 120,000 homes for one year. Illinois’ Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) increases support for renewable energy to reach 40 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040 in the state. CEJA currently requires that at least 10% of the workforce on community solar projects includes equity eligible people, increasing to 30% by 2030. Learn more: http://spr.ly/6043QR0oF

Building on our nation-leading reliability and resiliency requires a commitment to projects where enriched learnings can help us meet and surpass our grid goals. That’s why we’re proud to partner with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in commissioning a new battery-energy storage system near Prairie Street Brewing Company in Rockford. Part of our ongoing solar and battery energy storage project, this pilot will help us research resource management systems that will support the efficient use of solar power generation and grid resiliency. We’ll explore the benefits of distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS) to support the integration of private solar panel deployments to grid-connected battery energy storage systems. The results will give us relevant data needed to support the scalability of similar projects in our service territory as we continue our focus on the expansion of solar and other renewables to meet a goal of 100% clean energy by 2050, as outlined by Illinois’ Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA). “Building on our nation-leading reliability and resiliency, ComEd continues to invest in modernizing and strengthening the grid our customers rely on,” said Gil C. Quiniones, our President and CEO. “Exploratory pilot projects like this one are crucial to ensuring the grid is fully prepared to support large-scale solar and battery energy storage solutions that are key to the clean energy future in northern Illinois.” Learn more about how this project works to support the brewery by maximizing the potential of their solar energy generation and how we’ll use the learnings to influence future solar panel and battery energy storage solutions: http://spr.ly/6049Qy2n7

Distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS) play a critical role in optimizing grid operations and our work to meet the goals of Illinois' Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), which includes an equitable transition to 100% clean energy in the state by 2050. Over the past five years, we've supported 114% annual growth in DERs for residential customers and 25% annual growth for commercial and industrial customers. DERMS offers the ability to manage DER contributions dynamically in real-time, ensuring grid stability without requiring costly infrastructure upgrades, and the way we're doing it is all the buzz. We’re pleased to join Metropolitan Mayors Caucus to announce a third cohort of communities who will participate in the EV Readiness Program, a unique initiative designed to support local governments of northern Illinois as they prepare to meet growing demand of #EVs! With our commitment, the EV Readiness Program will help 20 communities prepare policy and take steps so that more residents and businesses can access EVs and related infrastructure safely and equitably. "Working alongside our partners at the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, ComEd is committed to expanding access to EVs and charging for our communities across northern Illinois,” said Louie Binswanger, our senior vice president of Governmental, Regulatory and External Affairs. “Training through the EV Readiness Program is essential for helping communities navigate the policies and infrastructure planning needed to ramp up EV adoption safely and equitably. Congratulations to the newest cohort, who will help more residents in their communities unlock the myriad benefits of EVs – from reducing harmful pollution in our communities to creating cost savings benefits for those driving them.” This is just one example of how ComEd is helping spur widespread and its related environmental benefits – and will help our community partners advance closer to the state’s goal of adding 1 million EVs on the road by 2030.
