Community Based Public Safety Collective
Public Safety
Helping community-based public safety organizations build their infrastructure, capacity and reach.
About us
The Community Based Public Safety (CBPS) Collective is made up of experts in building neighborhood leadership to advance safety -- the groups on the ground that do the work day in and day out to mediate conflict, get people in crisis into supportive services and put youth on a path away from violence and to stability. We represent and support the dozens of small, nonprofit, community-led grassroots organizations that, for decades, have been helping to forge peace, with little support or official recognition from local law enforcement and criminal justice. Investing in the community-based public safety leaders is the key difference-maker in stopping violence, ending mass incarceration and setting the nation on a transformational course toward shared safety rooted in community-led violence prevention. The Collective’s members are the premier national experts in the field. We have convened to preserve the integrity of the model and highlight Black and Brown practitioners' proven practices. The Collective will help CBPS rapidly build the infrastructure, capacity and support needed to scale with public funding.

Introducing Scaling Safety - Community Based Public Safety Collective Alliance for Safety and Justice 🏘️ Despite billions spent on US public safety, residents in low-income communities of color are 15 times more likely to be victimized by crime and 3 times less likely to get help than residents in wealthier areas. True public safety begins with community empowerment. Scaling Safety has an Audacious idea to put the "public" back in “public safety,” by accelerating the growth and development of resident-powered prevention programs. Over the next five years, Scaling Safety will provide technical support, flexible resources, and advocacy for resident-powered programs in five major US cities: Austin, Texas; Cleveland, Ohio; Jackson, Mississippi; Miami, Florida; and Tucson, Arizona. The goal is to scale up these programs to double access to help for the most vulnerable residents, reduce violence by up to 50%, integrate these programs within cities' safety ecosystems, and improve life for the over 2.5 million people who live in these areas overall. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/es6Up3jf #AudaciousProject

Mental health crises shouldn't be met with force. It's a fact: individuals with mental health disabilities are 16 times more likely to die during an encounter with law enforcement. Our communities need trained professionals who can de-escalate situations and provide support. On #WorldMentalHealthDay, let's continue to advocate for community-based public safety solutions that prioritize CVI crisis response teams and access to mental health care. #CrisisIntervention #cbpscollective #Communitybased #cvi #mentalhealthday #mentalhealthawareness #publichealth #publicsafety

Youth & Gun Violence Prevention & Community Violence Intervention Expert | Over 30 Years of Experience
"Evidence-based is a clinical term with a high threshold for meeting it. The work we do is often better described as evidence-informed because of the need for customization in community settings.” – Dr. Shani Buggs, @Black & Brown Collective for Community Solutions to Gun Violence During the Cities United annual Convening I was grateful to get a glimpse into the important work being done by The Brown Collective for Community Solutions to Gun Violence, a group of passionate researchers and advocates working to address the systemic impacts of gun violence in Black and Brown communities. Formed in response to the surge in homicides during the pandemic, the Collective is challenging outdated, rigid models of “evidence-based” approaches that often don’t align with the realities of community-based work. Instead, they're championing evidence-informed strategies that are rooted in research but flexible enough to adapt to the unique needs of communities. What really stood out to me is how they emphasize the critical role of data—not just to identify problems, but to drive real change. This data helps pinpoint where violence is happening, identify resource gaps, and ultimately improve the programs designed to save lives. The work goes beyond numbers. It’s about documenting the whole story—mentoring, job placement, mental health support—everything that keeps communities thriving. It’s time we rethink how we approach gun violence prevention and listen to the communities most affected. I’m incredibly inspired by the Collective’s commitment to doing just that. Shout out to Jocelyn Fontaine Dr. Talib Hudson and Shani Buggs for a fantastic presentation.
