Advocating for independent community oncology is about empowering the cancer community to raise their voices. CPAN advocates made that and much more happen in 2024, whether through demonstrating the value of community oncology to policymakers, participating in advocacy workshops, or convening at COA’s annual conference. Watch Rose Gerber, MS and CPAN advocacy leaders Angelina Lorello, specialist, advocacy & patient experience coordinator at New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, and Cynthia Przekop, director of clinical operations at Eastern Connecticut Hematology Oncology, discuss their advocacy experiences, CPAN’s 2024 successes, and what’s ahead in 2025: https://bit.ly/3DmVRTc #CancerAdvocacy #CancerPolicy #CommunityOncology

Want to get up to speed on state-level policy and advocacy? Check out COA’s recent webinar on the latest cancer care policy trends from across the country. During the event, Ted Okon, Nicolas Ferreyros, and James Lee highlighted three key issues: - White bagging, which causes treatment delays, increases unused medication waste, and burdens clinics - 340B, which increases cancer care costs, reduces patient choice, and drives health care mergers - Pharmacy benefit managers, which delay access, interfere with the doctor-patient relationship, and hike up prices Recap 2024 activity and learn what’s ahead for 2025: https://bit.ly/3VMy59t #340B #PBMReform #WhiteBagging

Since COA’s early years, executive director Ted Okon knew the work of protecting community oncology couldn’t be done alone. That’s why, alongside the COA team, he’s spent the last 15 years building a tireless collective of advocates. “Connecting and building relationships with people across the cancer care community who share our commitment to community oncology has made us what we are today,” says Okon. Pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) consistently threaten to wreck patients’ health and safety. Yet, PBMs continue to control when, where, and what patients must do to receive their physician-prescribed medication. Carla, a patient with colorectal cancer, was prescribed a common oral medication but was forced to fill the prescription at a specialty pharmacy by her PBM. Her doctor wrote the specific instructions, “two weeks on, one week off.” However, the pharmacy neglected to include “one week off” on the dosing instructions. After her third refill, Carla ended up in the hospital, fighting to live. https://bit.ly/3YQVcQW #PBM #PBMReform #PharmacyBenefitManager
