COMPOST2025 Recap! On Day 2 of the conference GCC's Board Chair, david paull, gave an enlightening presentation on the case for public-private partnerships and the insights he's gained over the past several years as CompostNow has worked with municipalities to bring composting programs to more communities.

Individual contributions matter. For months, I was frustrated by the absence of accessible composting where I live. I looked into starting a neighborhood committee and met with various city leaders, but found I lacked the bandwidth to tackle this on a larger scale — for now. I couldn’t take it anymore and signed our household up for composting with CompostNow . While it’s not the broader solution I want (and am still working toward) it is an immediate solution, and it’s one that thousands of other individuals are making. Those collective efforts are making a big difference. We spent the week at the US Composting Council's #Compost2025 Conference. There is so much to absorb and discuss! One highlight was the standing-room-only series on contamination. Moderated by Pierce Louis from Dirt Hugger, topics included "from food waste collection to composting" by Chris Seney of Republic Services, "programs in managing contamination" by Justin S. of CompostNow, and "contamination removal" by Jason Browne of Maryland Environmental Service. Some takeaways: *This is a key area of focus that people are working hard to solve. Let’s help each other! *Decide upfront what to accept and what recipe is right for you. If just starting, consider focusing on pre-consumer waste *Sorting is critical to success - how it arrives has enormous impact on the ability to process it into a usable resource. Isolate problems to identify limit issues: • Visuals help!  Signage, stickers, and photos can have a meaningful impact and provide opportunities to correct mistakes. Some are using AI on trucks to capture and alleviate issues • Leverage targeted education to build understanding among the community, whether residents, businesses and collectors • Keep residential and commercial separate • Assign a ground person to monitor and identify issues *Provide a feedback loop including tracking and reporting to resolve challenges and improvement the process *Test and improve as you go along *Minimize mistakes, for example, put a trash can in drop off areas Importantly, collaborate among peers to share and build on your experiences! #foodwastemanagement #sharedlearnings #avoidcontamination #USCC #sort Marjorie Spitz

2025 is off to a busy start. I will be speaking at the USCC #Compost2025 conference in Phoenix this week. My session will dig into the insights gained over the past several years as CompostNow has worked with municipalities to bring composting programs to more communities. This has been interesting, challenging, and fun work that often requires a lot of collaboration between different departments and stakeholders. I look forward to reconnecting with the greater composting community. Thanks to the THE UNITED STATES COMPOSTING COUNCIL for bringing the industry together. There is so much growth happening in this industry and what better way to celebrate that than at the annual conference. Year-after-year our members and team continue to break records and close the loop on food waste! 🎉 In 2024, the homes, businesses, and municipalities composting with our services diverted 18.7 million pounds of food scraps! Bringing our total all-time diversion to 91.1 million pounds! We couldn’t be more proud of our hard working team and dedicated members that have contributed to this impact one scrap at a time! We will have more exciting impact to celebrate with the release of our 2024 Annual Impact Report (still in the thermophilic phase of production 😉), so for now enjoy this snap-shot!
