Last month, Intern Associate Vanessa Fernandez Veloquio designed and led a vision boarding workshop with Texas Appleseed’s Criminal Justice Project. She created the curriculum to help participants better understand the connections between the mind, brain, and body in a safe environment. As the project team worked to create their vision boards, they engaged in meaningful dialogue within the community about their learning and aspirations. The project was a huge success and participants left with a better understanding of what they were looking for in their careers and personal life and how to move forward.

Recently, Associate Therapist Katherine B. Jares, LMSW and Intern Associate Vanessa Fernandez Veloquio attended the Manor ISD #MentalHealth Fair where they shared information on the work Con Safos Counseling does, distributed our newly-released zines, and talked about the care and therapy they provide. Thanks to everyone who made this event possible!

Our former Masters Social Work Intern Jesuye Olabisi,BSW,LMSW wrote an op-ed on the mental health challenges faced by refugees and immigrants. As part of the immigrant community, Jesuye personally experienced the lack of accessible and quality healthcare for marginalized folx seeking the care they need. 💻 Check out her perspective, as supported by current research in her Medium article! https://lnkd.in/g-YtVWXq

Con Safos Counseling Masters of Social Work interns drafted a research paper on “historical practices, systemic biases, and the resulting disparities” of #mentalhealth care for marginalized populations. Mental health services are not immune to the discrimination in healthcare. With LGBTQ+, BIPOC, refugee, and immigrant communities experiencing additional hardship for their identities, access to equitable care is necessary. https://lnkd.in/gMJ2Rgsp

Our Masters Social Work Intern, Jesuye Olabisi,BSW, wrote an op-ed two years ago, highlighting the racial disparities in health care. Con Safos was created as a safe and open space for marginalized folx. It’s just as important to expose the issues with our current systems as it is to solve them. Jesuye’s work highlights an issue that isn’t talked about enough. Stay tuned for an updated version of her op-ed continuing the call for healthcare equity. https://lnkd.in/g5PiHDp4

Meet lead therapist Sarah Alexis Shaney! Alexis created this practice as a way to bridge community and mental healing. Coming from a Mexican-American family as a queer, non-binary femme, they’ve felt the strain of “isms.” Their experiences allow them to identify the root of one's emotional distress and provide tools to manage those emotions. They hold a Master of Science and Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. Since graduating, they’ve struggled to find a sustainable career where they can assist others and themselves in being the most authentic and caring for the whole self. Con Safos, which comes from the Mexican American street art and creative community, means with respect. You can access their full story by clicking on the link below! https://lnkd.in/gzkAGaps

Hello, my name is Vanessa Fernandez Veloquio, and I'm a current Master’s in Social Work student working under the supervision of Alexis Shaney, LCSW. Originally from Mexico and raised in the border town of Hidalgo, Texas, I am passionate about working with immigrant #communities to create safe spaces where clients can heal from past traumas and feel empowered to advocate for themselves. I am grateful for the opportunity to intern at Con Safos Counseling, LLC. I hope to provide resources to reclaim agency and process big life changes, #stress, and #anxiety. If you have any questions or want to set up a free 15-minute consultation, please email me at vfernandez@consafoscounselingllc.org.
