Marseille, one of the Pilot Cities of the Cool Noons project, addresses climate change with an approach that integrates social and environmental justice. During a recent meeting with city representatives, it became evident how climate change exacerbates social inequalities, particularly impacting the most vulnerable neighborhoods. These areas are among the most exposed to the effects of heatwaves, directly affecting the health and safety of their residents. Such phenomena deepen existing disparities, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions. City councilors emphasized that tackling climate change also means addressing these inequalities, acknowledging the necessity of actions that protect the most fragile communities. This vision is based on the understanding that the fight against climate change cannot be separated from the fight against social inequalities. Marseille aims to become a model of inclusivity and innovation, inspiring other Mediterranean cities to adopt equitable and sustainable approaches. 📌 Stay tuned to Cool Noons to discover how Marseille and the other pilot cities are tackling climate challenges 👉 https://lnkd.in/dJC6ixVx AVITEM Ville de Marseille Interreg Euro-MED Programme #CoolNoons #CoolNoonsProject #EnhancingSustainableTourism #tourismedurable #sustainabletourism #Marseille

The meetings with the Pilot Cities continue. The latest city involved was Marseille, which revealed how climate change is transforming its territory. Starting with rising temperatures, summers are increasingly scorching, marked by heatwaves that challenge urban livability. However, the effects are not limited to the summer months: even in winter, unusually high temperatures disrupt natural balances and exacerbate the city's challenges. These changes intertwine with extreme and unpredictable weather events, highlighting the urgency for concrete action. One of the most visible impacts is flooding, which not only causes significant damage but also carries waste directly to the port, further worsening environmental conditions and demanding immediate interventions. 📌 Through the Cool Noons project, Marseille is addressing these challenges with innovative solutions aimed at improving thermal comfort and environmental management. Budva, renowned for its natural beauty and historical heritage, is among the hottest cities during the summer months. Over the past 30 years, rapid urban development has drastically reduced green spaces, exacerbating the issue of urban heat. "Comparing today’s Budva with that of 40 years ago, we see two completely different cities." The lack of green areas is not just a local issue but a challenge shared by many Mediterranean cities. Despite these difficulties, Budva is surrounded by extraordinary natural beauty, with mountains to the north, east, and west, and the sea to the south, offering a unique and attractive landscape. Its natural resources present an opportunity to balance urbanization and sustainability. Joining the Cool Noons project marks an important step in this direction, focusing on creating cooler and more pleasant routes to raise awareness among citizens and authorities about the importance of sustainable urban planning. During a recent call with representatives from Budva, the reasons why the city decided to join the Cool Noons project were discussed, driven by practical factors related to the local climate. 🔥 Budva is notoriously a hot city, especially from May to September, with significant peaks in July and August. The density of building and the increase of new constructions intensify the problem, reducing green areas and increasing urban heat. 🌿 The city has joined the "Cool Noons" project with the intent to "cool" the urban area by creating shaded paths that connect key points of the city. The goal is to make these summer walks enjoyable, counteracting the effects of high temperatures. 📈 The project acts as a catalyst to raise awareness among local authorities and citizens about the importance of sustainable urban strategies. The Cool Noons initiative is seen as a first step towards a broader commitment that could inspire future national policies. 📌 Stay updated: Continue to follow us to discover how Budva is adapting and innovating to improve the livability and sustainability of the city in the face of climate challenges. https://lnkd.in/dcn2FJyp Interreg Euro-MED Programme #CoolNoons #CoolNoonsProject #EnhancingSustainableTourism #SustainableTourism #ClimateResilience #UrbanInnovation
