With temperatures dropping outside, the competition within our CoorsTek Center for Advanced Materials (CCAM) facility in Golden, CO is heating up. Recently, the CCAM team hosted their 4th annual Chili Cook-Off, featuring ten unique entries. The event provided excellent culinary experiences and fostered a spirit of fierce but friendly competition. Employees from various departments gathered to mingle and cast their votes for the winner of the coveted Chili Champion trophy. Ultimately, Chris Mejia, Senior Manager of Research & Development, won the prize for the second consecutive year. Congratulations to Chris! Demonstrating his innovative skills, Chris (now known as the CCAM Chili Guru) said he experimented with a new recipe, which used a base of white chicken chili enhanced with the warming spices of curry. He always incorporates Colorado-grown roasted pueblo chilies as his now, not so secret ingredient. Thank you to our CCAM Employee Insight Team who hosted this event and to all our incredible employees who showed up to eat chili, vote for their favorite, and ensure our cook-off was an absolute success! We certainly are Better Together. #BetterTogether #FriendlyCompetition #EmployeeEngagement

Happy National Button Day! Did you know CoorsTek once made ceramic buttons? In the 1990s, CoorsTek entered the consumer market with several different products, including ceramic shirt buttons. These buttons were made from one of our zirconia materials, which has a unique structure that combines strength, toughness, and heat resistance. We even filed a patent for this button in 1991! Because the button was made from ceramic, it would have less chance of breaking during dry cleaning and was marketed as being so tough it would outlast the article of clothing on which it was placed. Although we no longer manufacture ceramic shirt buttons, CoorsTek continues to pioneer technical applications for our many zirconia material formulations that are ideal for extreme mechanical environments. #NationalButtonDay #TechnicalCeramics

As we gear up for the holiday baking season, here’s a Friday fun fact: In the early 1990s, a CoorsTek subsidiary, Ceramicon Designs, developed ceramic cookie molds for the company Brown Bag Designs. While this fun and innovative use for ceramics never made it to production, they remind us of our sweet beginnings! Who knew our path could go from cookie cutters to cutting-edge technology? #FridayFunFacts #BakingHistory #CookieCreativity #TechnicalCeramics

Ever gotten a tattoo that seemed like a great idea at the time… only to feel differently down the road? Maybe it was an ex’s name, a spontaneous design, or a trend that hasn’t aged well. It’s wild how something so permanent can end up feeling so temporary! Fortunately, laser tattoo removal has become significantly more advanced in the last several years, thanks in part to Q-switched lasers that can break down ink particles in the skin so they can be absorbed and eliminated by the body. Q-switched lasers can target specific tattoo ink colors with minimal impact on the surrounding skin. Q-switch technology involves the combination of highly controlled YAG laser crystals, which can be engineered to create the desired wavelength to target particular colors. However, traditional monocrystalline YAG materials are expensive and time consuming to produce. Fortunately, CoorsTek has developed state-of-the-art transparent polycrystalline YAG optoceramics, which remove many of the barriers presented by single crystal YAG to deliver optimal performance at scale. Technical ceramics may not be able to prevent bad tattoos in the first place, but thanks to innovations in materials science, CoorsTek is helping to eliminate regretful choices, one tattoo at a time.
