About us
The Copyright Society, a non-profit organization established in 1953, is devoted to copyright law awareness and education. With headquarters in New York City and over 1,000 members nationwide, the Society's mission is to foster interest in and advance the study and understanding of copyright law in literature, music, art, theater, motion picture, television, computer software, architecture, and other works of authorship, and their distribution through both traditional and new media. Members of the Copyright Society include attorneys and professionals from the world’s leading IP firms and entertainment and media industries, solo practitioners, in-house counsel, the authors of primary copyright law treatises, representatives of the U.S. Copyright Office, publishers, academics and law students. The Society provides outstanding opportunities for interaction with all facets of the copyright law community. The Society holds national events, such as the Brace Lecture and the Annual and Midwinter Meetings. In addition, its 15 regional Chapters conduct events in their respective areas. The Society also publishes the Journal of the Copyright Society, and awards the annual Seton Award and Award for Excellence in Creativity. The Copyright Society does not register copyrights or offer legal advice. We are not able to tell you whether a particular work is protected by copyright or refer you to an attorney. We would listen to anything this trio was talking about but bonus if it's a healthy debate around the question "Whose Fault is it, Anyway? – Assigning Liability for Infringing AI Outputs". Special thanks to Joe Gratz (Morrison Foerster), Joshua L. Simmons (Kirkland & Ellis) and Nadia B. Steele (Visa) for ending The Copyright Society's Midwinter Meeting on a high note.

Copyright Society President Daniel Cooper knew that we couldn't come to New Orleans without doing a jazz panel. Many thanks to Arthur Levy (Songtradr/The Levy Firm PLLC), Olufunmilayo Arewa (George Mason University - Antonin Scalia Law School/Center for Intellectual Property x Innovation Policy) and Joseph Fishman (Vanderbilt University Law School) for taking that note and building a fascinating melody in "Improvisational Creativity: Protection and Appropriation Challenges for Ephemeral Media". CS members can watch it in a few weeks in the Copyright Society media library.

Today's 2025 Midwinter Meeting's highlight is Cowan, DeBaets, Abrahams & Sheppard LLP, who is graciously serving as our activity sponsor in #NOLA (how fun?!). They are supporting some amazing social events, and we encourage everyone to sign up quickly as spaces are limited! We've got something for everyone- from walking tours and cooking classes to museum tours and our very own second-line parade! While we do ask that attendees register for the onsite social activities, do note that the actual 2025 Midwinter Meeting is now SOLD OUT! (Please note that we have a virtual option for those who want to participate). https://lnkd.in/gwJU6J_i #Copyright #CopyrightLaw #MW25
