Luxury Travel Cases for Shotguns 💼 "Our heritage takes us back to a time when men cared about their appearance and understood that there was no substitute for quality," writes Ball and Buck, who describe themselves as "an outfitter tailored for the sporting gentleman." They've teamed up with Negrini, an Italian manufacturer of luxury hunting rifle cases, on this $540 Cast and Blast Hard Case. The cases are made from thermoformed double-wall ABS and trimmed out in canvas and leather. As for the "Cast and Blast" name, one half of the case is for your shotgun and shells; the other half is designed to hold a fly fishing set-up (rod, reel and gear). You learn about a new product category every day; I didn't even know this was a thing. Toyota's Shipping-Container-Inspired Reconfigurable Minivan EV Concept 🚐 This startling-looking EV minivan concept is by Toyota. It's named Kayoibako, in reference to a type of configurable inter-facility shipping container used in Japan. In that spirit, the idea behind the concept is that it's a box "with an 'ultra-expandable' design that allows tailoring to suit different roles [and] can support a diverse range of applications." The company sees the flexible design being configured as a delivery vehicle, a mobile shop, a camper, a tiny shuttle bus, and even a personal vehicle for wheelchair users. An Electricity-Free, Spring-Loaded Bike Hoist 🚲️ "My garage is basically a workshop decorated with backpacks, kayaks, golf clubs, skis and, of course, bicycles," writes engineer Robert G. Ozarski. An avid cyclist, Ozarski found the clutter was getting in the way of his hobby. To make his bike more easily accessible, he invented this easy-to-use bike hoist. Ozarski's Kradl object requires no power. It attaches to a ceiling joist with two screws (and can be mounted on an angle, up to 45 degrees, if your ceiling is sloped). It contains a spring-loaded cable that you hook around your bike's top tube or wheel. Then you pull on the release cable, and the hoist does the rest. Robot Dog + Leafblower = Labor-Free Yardwork 🍂 Redditor Enginerdz came up with a creative use for one of his robot dogs (he has four): Yardwork. I particularly love the Pringles can. It has nothing to do with extending the hot exhaust past the robot's body—you can clearly see the large exhaust port on the blower above—and is instead being used as a shim. "It was the closest thing in my shed I found," Enginerdz writes, "to help prop up the blower, to angle the nozzle down and hold it on position." AI + Animals = Silent Fan Blade Based on Owl Wings 🦉 In order to design a quieter fan blade, German auto supplier Mahle analyzed parts of the animal kingdom with AI. "We learn from nature: It inspires us in many areas!" says Dr.-Ing. Uli Christian Blessing, Head of Development Thermal Management at MAHLE. "With the help of AI, we analyzed the characteristic features of bats, swordfish, and many other inspirations from nature. We finally ended up with the owl, the silent hunter, as the main template for our new fan." Brilliant Leaning Wheelchair Design is Easier to Steer, Takes Less Energy to Use 🦽 Research assistants at ETH Zurich's Laboratory for Movement Biomechanics have identified a problem common to users of manual wheelchairs. Reto Togni and Stefan Villiger learned that wheelchair users have to constantly correct course, putting undue strain on their shoulders and occasionally causing injury. When rolling across a surface that's tilted to one side—as sidewalks are, in order to shed rain—the user must push harder on the down side. Also, when turning, the user must essentially apply the brakes on one side while pushing with the other side, effectively working against themselves. Togni and Villiger came up with a clever solution. Their modified wheelchair design can be put in "steering mode," whereby the front wheels are locked into a straight position. The backrest is connected to the rear wheels, and when the user leans, the wheelchair turns. Wireless Charging, Now in Linen and Leather ⚡️ When I was in design school, a professor told us that technology would reduce the amount of objects in our lives. To some extent, that has happened; the smartphone took the place of cell phones, media players, cameras and daily planners. But the smartphone then spawned additional product ecosystems of its own. Take wireless charging. The thought was to get rid of the cable. Reduce, right? Wrong. Wireless charging means we've now got objects that would've looked strange a decade ago, like this Mag:2 charging stand and Mag:3 charging tray from tech accessory brand Courant. Most of the offerings we've seen in this space are plastic and metal, but the brand is hoping to stand out by skinning their objects in leather or linen. While the addition of fabric makes the objects more touch-friendly, I'd guess it also makes them more difficult to recycle. I'm not sure that's the right choice; as charging tech evolves, do you think these objects will still be in service in ten years' time? A Terrifying Demonstration of a Biomimetic Humanoid Robot 🤖 A startup called Clone Robotics has taken a biomimetic approach to designing humanoid robots. Their ultra-creepy android torso, which looks straight out of Westworld, is mounted to a pelvis and features an artificial ribcage and hydraulics-powered muscles. The company says their goal is to make "low-cost, musculoskeletal androids with human-level hands trained to perform all the common labor needed for daily life." I am not looking forward to the day these things get legs. Industrial Designer Figures Out How to Recycle Plastic Into Stone-Like Sheets 🪨 On a trip to Bali in 2018, Industrial Design student Jared Seifert and Interior Design student Lauren Copping witnessed locals attempting to repurpose waste plastic. When the duo returned to their studies at Ferris State University's Kendall College of Art and Design, they decided to do the same. The two started a company, Design Declassified, that turns post-consumer and industrial waste into recycled plastic sheets. Two things are of interest: One is that they figured out how to create the sheets, which are made from 100% recycled plastic, with "No added glue, resin, or color. All plastic waste is reused in manufacturing, along with offcuts. No binders or surface treatments are used, making it a perfect material for the circular economy." Two is that they've managed to make the material attractive, targeting furniture designers. Most of Design Declassified's sheets, which can be machined using woodworking tools and machinery, resemble marble, stone or terrazzo. Industrial Design Case Study: An Alzheimer's-Battling Therapy Light 💡 Based on MIT research, a company called Bright developed Beacon40, a light technology that "could significantly reduce toxic beta-amyloid levels in the brain, a major factor in cognitive decline." To turn this into a product aimed at those struggling with Alzheimer's, Bright turned to ID consultancy Y Studios. "BEACON40® therapy light is designed to promote brain health for people living with Alzheimer's disease symptoms. Beacon40's technology is based on neural research that shows lights pulsing at a gamma frequency of 40Hz (40 times per second) increases microglia responses in the brain to purge the amyloid beta plaque associated with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Complementing scientifically proven methods to dramatically reduce the risk of cognitive decline including regular exercise, healthy diet and quality sleep, Beacon40 can also be used by people looking to prevent cognitive decline."
