Excited to share an incredible experience from November 8, 2024 - National First-Generation College Students Celebration Day! For the past two years, I’ve had the pleasure of serving as a Table Leader at “Le Diner en Blanc (DEB) - Jackson.” Inspired by those events, I dreamed of bringing a similar experience to First-Generation College Students at Jackson State University. That vision became reality as “First-Gen en Blanc: Monter de Niveau (Level Up)” with help from the Jackson State University Student Success team! The day was filled with joy and celebration! First-gen students, staff, and administrators gathered at different locations across campus, processing together to a private spot. We waved our napkins inspired by DEB to kick off the lunch, honored academic achievements, recognized generous donors supporting our First-Gen College Fund, and ended with a heartfelt balloon launch, sharing messages of hope and success. The event was everything I envisioned and more! Special thanks to the amazing team whose hard work made it all possible! #FirstGenEnBlanc #JSUStudentSuccess #FirstGen #CelebrateFirstGen #FirstGenForward FirstGen Forward Council for Opportunity in Education

A heartfelt thank you to Catherine Pimentel Ybarra for nominating me as Director of the Year. Earning this award reflects the work ethic my parents instilled in me and my commitment to Fresno State Upward Bound students when I accepted this position in January 2023. It demonstrates the support and patience of my partner, Joshua, for which I am deeply grateful. Additionally, it reflects the support of my family and the teamwork of the Upward Bound staff and TRIO students because I wouldn’t be a “Director of the Year” without them. Serving as the director of two TRIO programs has been an honor, as I’ve had the privilege of supporting low-income and first-generation high school students. In many ways, I continue to evolve into the educator I needed growing up as I navigated my academic journey. Shout out to my first-generation students, mentors, and friends! South Central L.A está presente! ✊🏽🇲🇽🏳️🌈 Go Dogs! #TRIOworks 📸 Martina Granados

✨ Brick by Brick: Building on Your Strengths Celebrating National First-Generation Day at MIT! ✨ Last week, we concluded Massachusetts Institute of Technology FLI Week of Celebration, the result of a semester-long journey dedicated to empowering, connecting, and celebrating our First-Generation, Low-Income (FLI) students. This year’s theme, "Brick by Brick: Building on Your Strengths," was an ode to LEGO and symbolized our commitment to an asset-based approach—honoring the resilience, strengths, and unique contributions our FLI community brings to MIT. As one of 65 recipients of a grant from the National FirstGen Forward Network, made possible by TIAA, the Council for Opportunity in Education, and the Strada Education Foundation, we integrated this theme across multiple events and initiatives, building up to our main celebration on November 8th. In addition to our academic workshops throughout the week, over 300 students joined us to on Friday to craft custom LEGO mini-figure keychains, reflect on personal strengths through FLI-themed affirmation cards, enjoy LEGO-inspired cupcakes (thank you, Jocelyn Heywood and Renee!), and wear our custom MIT FLI sweatshirts, a powerful symbol of unity and pride. Special thanks to Jonathan and his team at Boston Brick Co for providing over 13 pounds(!) of LEGO pieces, adding vibrancy to the day. Collective gratitude to our partner in all things FLI and GFLI, Diana Grass, whose dedication and vision ensured seamless integration of our Graduate FLI community. Thanks as well to the Office of Graduate Education and to Denzil A. Streete, PhD and Noelle Wakefield, PhD for fostering this impactful collaboration.Thank you to Humaira Shaikh Kendall J. Coleman and the LEGO Group for engaging with us throughout the process and Bryan Thomas, Jr. for facilitating the connection! Deep appreciation to my amazing boss Diep H. Luu, PhD for always supporting the wildest of my ideas and visions! Above all, heartfelt thanks to my amazing team members who lead the charge on supporting our FLI community J. Alex Hoyt Tiffany Low—your tireless dedication throughout the semester brought this vision to life. Witnessing our FLI students’ connections and personal growth during this celebration was a true testament to the power of thoughtful, inclusive programming. Thank you to everyone who joined us. Together, we’re showing that building a strong, empowering community truly happens, brick by brick. 📸 Expert Photography by Jordan Sell !! #FirstGen #MIT #FLI #CommunityCelebration #BrickByBrick #StudentSuccess #CommunityBuilding #MITCommunity #FirstScholarsNetwork #celebratefirstgen
