With both gratitude and a touch of sadness, CRN shared that James Cedric Griffiths, Ph.D., CRN's SVP of International & Scientific Affairs, has announced he plans to retire from the company at the end of this month. CRN extends heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Griffiths as he embarks on this exciting new chapter—one we hope includes plenty of quality time with his grandchildren. While we’re thrilled for what’s ahead, his presence will be deeply missed at CRN. https://lnkd.in/e3CAg7UP

The leading trade association of the dietary supplement / functional food industry—since 1973
About us
The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), founded in 1973 and based in Washington, D.C., is the leading trade association representing dietary supplement and functional food manufacturers and ingredient suppliers. CRN companies produce a large portion of the dietary supplements marketed in the United States and globally. Our member companies manufacture popular national brands as well as the store brands marketed by major supermarkets, drug stores and discount chains. These products also include those marketed through natural food stores and mainstream direct selling companies. CRN represents more than 150 companies that manufacture dietary ingredients and/or dietary supplements, or supply services to those suppliers and manufacturers. Our member companies are expected to comply with a host of federal and state regulations governing dietary supplements in the areas of manufacturing, marketing, quality control and safety. Our supplier and manufacturer member companies also agree to adhere to additional voluntary guidelines as well as to CRN’s Code of Ethics.

CRN has issued a statement responding to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf's recent remarks at the NIH-FDA Nutrition Regulatory Workshop. The statement addresses his misunderstanding of DSHEA and dismissive claims about the scientific evidence supporting dietary supplements. CRN highlighted the need for stronger enforcement of existing regulations rather than imposing premarket evaluation. Read CRN's full statement here: https://lnkd.in/eUWqyD45

🚨 CRN raised concerns regarding the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force’s (USPSTF) latest draft recommendations advising against the use of #vitaminD and #calcium supplements for primary prevention of falls and fractures in community-dwelling older adults. CRN acknowledged the USPSTF’s efforts to evaluate existing data but noted that the recommendations were limited to a small segment of the population and missed the mark in key areas. 🗣️ “Americans continue to fall short on key nutrients like calcium and vitamin D,” said CRN SVP of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Andrea Wong. “Dismissing supplementation as unnecessary for the general population undermines its value for those who need it most. It’s time for guidance that reflects the full scope of science and prioritizes public health equity.” 👉 Learn more in CRN’s recent press release: https://lnkd.in/gZWwMUG5

While CRN acknowledges the efforts of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee in reviewing extensive data on U.S. nutrient intakes, we’re disappointed that scientific evidence related to #dietarysupplements — a critical component in addressing nutrient gaps — was overlooked in the process. As 2024 marks 30 years since #DSHEA, CRN President & CEO Steven Mister reflected on the evolving #dietarysupplement regulations in a NutraIngredients byline. Mister highlighted CRN’s balanced approach to regulation, advocating for policies that enhance FDA oversight, like mandatory product listing, while pushing back against overly restrictive laws. He also emphasized CRN’s leadership in self-regulation, including guidelines for #melatonin supplements and e-commerce transparency. "CRN's job is to navigate the landscape and lead our companies toward a climate that fosters consumer confidence while preventing burdensome regulations that would stymie the industry," said Mister.
