  • County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. proclaimed today Mohawk Valley Community College Soccer Day in Oneida County in recognition of the impressive achievements of the Hawks men’s and women’s soccer teams. Coaches and players from both teams were honored at our monthly Board of Legislators meeting where Mohawk Valley Community College President Randall VanWagoner was presented with a proclamation. The men’s team won the NJCAA Division III national championship in November and the women’s team finished as the national runner up. MVCC is the only NJCAA D-3 college in the nation to send both its men’s and women’s teams to the national championship tournament in each of the last two years. Oneida County is very proud of these dedicated student athletes and coaching staffs who have upheld the highest standards of collegiate athletics while representing our community on the national stage.

  • As we celebrate Black History Month, we wanted to take a moment to salute Oneida County's own, Everett T. Holmes, the first African-American Mayor in New York State. Holmes made history when he was elected Mayor of the Town of Bridgewater as a write-in candidate in 1974. He was the grandson of an escaped slave who came north with the Union Army after the Civil War. Everett spent his youth working on the farm and attending school. He married young and had eight children with his first wife. He had three more children with his second wife. In the 1930s Holmes, along with his siblings and children, formed a minstrel show which was presented for the benefit of many local charities. In the 1940s he began work as a farmhand in Bridgewater, ultimately buying and working his own farm. He also honed his woodworking skills which allowed him to not only build a home for his family but also serve as a "general handyman" in the area. According to a blog written about him and his election "He won because he was well-known, liked, and had a record of being active in the community." His election attracted national attention and he received commendations from many officials including President Richard M. Nixon. He served his small community for 2 terms; the first ran from 1974 to 1976 and the second from 1978 until his death in 1982. He was inducted to Oneida County History Center Hall of Fame in 2011.
