How effective is base isolation? Check out this video of two simple structures, one has a traditional foundation and the other is base isolated. We applied some historical earthquake records to the two structures and you can watch their response side by side. Can you guess which one is base isolated? Displacements are greatly magnified for illustration purposes. Base isolation is an incredible way to limit the energy from an earthquake from entering the structural system. Base isolation is being used on some of the most prominent US buildings and monuments; Pasadena City Hall, San Francisco City Hall, Salt Lake City and County Building and LA City Hall are all mounted on base isolation systems. Base isolation is also used on a smaller scale. It’s not uncommon for isolated raised floor systems to be used to safeguard essential equipment against earthquakes. Base isolation has also been used to protect statues and other works of art at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo’s Ueno Park. CP&A has designed base isolation system for both buildings and ship to shore container cranes. #StructuralEngineering #Seismic

To celebrate global lifting awareness day #GLAD2024, we are posting a video of a crane-wharf interaction study. The goal of the study is to determine if sway of the cranes during regular operation will cause unfavorable interactions with a flexible wharf. #ContainerCranes

Just wrapping up a crane-wharf interaction study. CP&A performed a time-history analysis to study the interaction of a pair of STS container cranes with a wharf. All structures have a similar natural frequency. The wharf is a simplified model that captures the first three modes of vibration. The wharf is modeled as a simple beam with a lot of springs attached to it. The STS cranes are constrained to the simplified wharf model. CP&A were part of the design team that completed an upgrade of 3 separate paint hangars. Our scope of work included: 🔹Complete Mechanical and Structural design of custom stacker cranes that operate in a class I Div I environment. 🔹Vertical Upgrade of one of the Paint Hangars. 🔹Extension of overhead maintenance hoists in the attic. 🔹New drop in panels to allow access to the cranes from the walk on ceiling. We arent able to post pictures of the hangars and cranes, but we did win some door prizes in the paper airplane contests. So we got that going for us!
