  • STORMWATER STABILIZATION -- CRANSTON continues to see significant progress with the redesign and reconstruction of South Sea Pines Drive within Hilton Head Island's southern Sea Pines, CSA. CRANSTON's civil engineering team, as well as the landscape architecture team, provided infrastructure design aimed at improving the roadway and the management of stormwater on its surface. The scope of work includes all of South Sea Pines Drive, its bike/pedestrian paths, landscaped median strips, and a new underground stormwater sewer system, among other considerations. CRANSTON previously provided civil engineering for the community's North Sea Pines Drive project before moving into the next phase, which has included all of South Sea Pines Drive. The project now is nearly complete, with current construction occurring in the vicinity of the Salty Dog restaurant complex and beyond. We're grateful to the Sea Pines CSA for partnering with us on the project. #cranston #seapinescsa #hiltonheadisland #civilengineering #landscapearchitecture

  • EMERGENCY ACTION PLANNING -- Nothing will put to the test a city's river-derived water system -- or its Emergency Action Plan (EAP) -- like a devastating hurricane with 100-mile-per-hour winds and literally hundreds of downed trees and debris. And it stood up to the test, with some valuable lessons learned. That's the general message emerging from a recent annual EAP training and planning session hosted by the City of Augusta, Ga.'s Augusta Utilities and the Augusta Canal Authority -- and led largely by a team of CRANSTON civil engineers. CRANSTON, working with those government entities, along with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other regulators, leads the ongoing development and updating of an EAP document aimed at protecting and managing the water system through severe storm and other events that can threaten not only the water system itself but also downtown Augusta, Ga. Based on that plan, CRANSTON and city officials walked attendees, including city engineers, federal and state emergency management officials, and local first-responders through the effects of the hurricane event and how well the EAP allowed officials to respond based on the EAP framework. Some of the biggest challenges of the disaster event: Hundreds of downed trees in and around the Augusta Canal, which has been diverting water from the Savannah River since 1845 for Augusta's drinking water and generating electricity for more than a century; prolonged loss of electricity in the region; pumping station equipment failure; and limited real-time communication among city officials, other government agencies, first responders, and the public. CRANSTON's Mitchell Murchison and Cary Nagler, with support from Swarupa Paudel, presented their findings and additional training to officials recently at Augusta Utilities' pumping station facilities during an annual training seminar. Such EAPs represent yet another way CRANSTON empowers communities to thrive. #cranston #augustaga #augustacanal #civilengineering #waterresourcemanagement #augustautilities
