Creature Conserve is growing a creative community that combines art with science to cultivate new pathways for wildlife conservation 🐝🐞🐜🌸🔬🥼🎨📝🐾 We do this through programs, like our scholarship program, that are designed to support the collaborative art-sci process. Each year we distribute about $26,000 (about ⅓ of our annual operating budget!) through our Scholarship Programs directly to artists, designers, writers, scientists, traditional knowledge holders, and other experts around the world to support their bold new steps in wildlife conservation. This year, we’re hoping to raise $8,000 to support our 2025 programs. As a Creature Conserve Curatorial Fellow, Alexandra Ionescu curated amazing online programming around beavers this summer. You can now watch the panel discussion on YouTube and get inspired by Beavers: Restorers of Biodiversity!
Assoc. Director of Regenerative Projects at Biodiversity For A Livable Climate | Ecological Artist | Beaver Believer
The webinar I organized and curated on beavers through my fellowship with Creature Conserve is now available on Youtube! This online panel discussion includes presentations by Loren Spears, enrolled Narragansett Tribal citizen & Executive Director of Tomaquag Museum; Ben Goldfarb, environmental journalist & author; Dr. Emily Fairfax, Assistant Professor of Geography at University of Minnesota; and Jasmine Gutbrod, Environmental Artist & Educator followed by a Q&A. Lorén Spears discussed the significance of beavers to the Narragansett tribe. Ben Goldfarb covered beaver biology, ecology, and history, emphasizing how landowners and municipalities are learning to coexist with these keystone species. Dr. Emily Fairfax discussed her research on the role of beaver-engineered landscapes in wildfire prevention, emphasizing how beaver-influenced areas remain green and act as fire refugia even during megafires. Jasmine Gutbrod shared her work with WildLives, using wildlife cameras to engage the youth in environmental storytelling, focusing on Providence’s local beaver population and the perspectives of youth environmentalists. Along with the drive to raise awareness about the crucial role beavers play in our ecosystems, I was also motivated by the fact that 'Tomaquag' means 'beaver' in the Narragansett language (or as Lorén taught us Tummòckquaûog or Tummòck), a reminder and remembrance of their importance to the ecology and cosmology of place. The same name, "Tomaquag," is Rhode Island's only Indigenous museum. Thank you once more Dr. Lucy Spelman & Heather McMordie for this incredible opportunity! And to everyone that attended. 270 people registered for the event and at least 130 people attended. It was inspiring to see such a strong turnout, and I hope the energy continues to ripple through communities, transmuting into meaningful action and coexistence.

WE’RE THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE the upcoming launch of 𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙉𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙨: 𝙒𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, edited by Christopher Kondrich, Lucy Spelman and Susan Tacent –––––––– Forthcoming from the University of Minnesota Press in January 2025, Creature Needs is a collection of new work by an exciting diversity of 39 poets and writers paired with excerpts from the scientific articles that inspired them. Organized around the six basic survival needs for all species—air, food, water, shelter, room to move, and community—the collection explores how these essential needs are threatened by climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction. A collaboration with Creature Conserve, this collection emphasizes the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect all species. —— As a form of conservation action, we are being sponsored this fall by CREATURE CONSERVE to execute a project to explore, analyze, discuss and collect data from ecosystems in some locations of the Amazon Raiforest and Highlands of Ecuador as part of a the Sustainable Product Design of The Rain Spirit. We will focus on using local ingredients in Ecuador and correlating them with the territories where endemic frog species face declining due to climate change and habitat fragmentation. We will be working with Biologists in Ecuador to determine the species in danger located and the territories of the some ingredients provided by indigenous communities and map the sites to document and characterize. So, before designing and launching our first skin and personal care products, we will consciously choose precious ingredients that come from rich regions in Ecuador with ethical backgrounds that can sustain agroecological activities towards climate change and conservation of frogs as bioindicators. #ecuador #sostenibilidad

New project alert: Birds in Indian folktales 🐦🔥 Growing up, many of us cherished the folktales narrated by our grandparents, where legendary birds and animals often took centre stage. These stories not only entertained but also conveyed life lessons and cultural values. I am very excited about my new series, “Birds in Indian Folktales,” which Creature Conserve supports. Through this series, I’ll explore the significant role of birds in Indian folktales, arts, and songs and how these tales have been passed down through generations. Stay tuned for an exciting traditional storytelling workshop. If you’re interested in participating, watch for more updates. #scholarship
