Ever wonder why screenwriters, authors, playwrights, and others can create stories based on pre-existing works? It’s all about copyright law. If the copyright is still valid, the new creator needs a license from the copyright owner to create a derivative work. However, if the work is in the public domain, such as the original L. Frank Baum Wizard of Oz book, then adaptations can be made without permission. That’s how Wicked is possible without being an infringement! #copyright #copyrightlaw #SFLawyers #IPLawyers #IPLaw #Wicked #entertainmentlaw

Gibson, maker of iconic guitars, has sent a cease and desist letter to the manufacturer of a guitar company purportedly endorsed by Trump. Gibson says the guitars, which sell for upwards of $1,000 ($10K for a signed one!) infringe the Les Paul body shape and other Gibson #trademarks. Oddly, the guitars don’t appear to have been made yet, although the website says all sales are final. https://buff.ly/4i3OuQv #guitar #tradedress

Crown, LLP Partner, Nicole Katsin, sets the stage for success with start-ups. Congrats on a great panel!
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of discussing start-up issues with this esteemed panel! There are so many pitfalls founders can fall into, and it’s important to have an experienced counsel on your side to help keep the ship on course from the beginning. - The Bar Association of San Francisco Lara DeCaro William Jhaveri-Weeks Anna Suh Alyssa Frederick #SFLawyers #StartUps #Crownllp #AdvisingCreativity
