What is the relationship with your body like? When we have certain expectations about how we want our bodies to be, it's easy for this relationship to slip out of balance. We try to control, and the body does its best to accommodate. Yet there’s so much going on behind the scenes that we don’t appreciate. We are walking, functioning miracles. When the body encounters limitations or disease, it gets a bigger say. If it no longer does what we want it to do, redefining the relationship can be a huge edge to cross. We may pass through resentment, grief and fury before coming into an empathetic relationship with the body. What’s possible when you look at your relationship with your body as a collaboration? Thanks to Faith Fuller and Katie Churchman, ORSCC, PCC, ACTC for the discussion in Episode 6.7 of the Relationship Matters podcast which inspired this post. Podcast >> https://lnkd.in/gwjC9Y7

As 2025 begins, it can feel like it's time to change the story we tell about ourselves and the systems we touch. Wharton professor Katy Milkman calls this the "fresh start effect." According to her research, pivotal moments like the start of a new year, a holiday, a birthday or a new job are ideal opportunities to break free from the status quo and form new habits. One principle of Relationship Systems Intelligence (RSI) holds that systems are always changing. In navigating certain types of emergence, systems can undergo an identity crisis. An entirely new myth, story or narrative may be required. As ORSC coaches, we support systems in honoring the old myth and forming a new story about who they now want to be. Here are a few questions to ask: Where do we as a collective begin when our story is not working? What do we need to grieve? What can be celebrated? What is the heavy lifting needing our collective support? With each fresh start, we have an opportunity to consciously create a new chapter in our relationships and lives. What will your new myth be? Thanks to Floyd C. for his thoughts on myth change which inspired this post.

When you find yourself wanting more for your clients than they want for themselves, these questions can be useful. 1 - Is it true? Is what I want for or see in my client true, or is it just my own projection or personal bias? How is it true? How is it not true? This reflection creates clarity by separating assumptions from reality. 2 - Is it helpful to share this now? Timing matters. If a client isn’t ready to hear something, even a brilliant insight won’t serve them. For instance, if a client is facing a life-changing event such as a diagnosis or job loss, jumping ahead to possible positives before they’ve processed their initial trauma will not be helpful. They need space to fully experience their pain, fear, or grief before they can see the potential for growth. Honor where clients are in their journey. 3 - Is it my place? Finally, ask if it is your place to guide them in this way. You may find yourself wanting clients to follow a particular path, but coaching isn’t about imposing your own beliefs. It’s about empowering people to find their own way. Everyone has their own timeline, and a journey that might not unfold in the way that we as coaches expect. Our role is to walk alongside them, not to lead them toward a destination. Thanks to Faith Fuller and Katie Churchman, ORSCC, PCC, ACTC for their discussion in Episode 6.6 of the Relationship Matters podcast which inspired this post.
