We're excited to see our friends at Trust for Public Land working with the Penobscot Nation on a new model for returning Native lands! Many land returns in the US have restrictions in place that predetermine how Native nations can manage the land. While #landback has varying meanings and appearances, there have been ongoing critiques that stipulations (like conservation easements) in land returns impede Tribal self-determination and sovereignty. TPL and Penobscot Nation have sought to do land return differently. Penobscot Nation will acquire full, unrestricted ownership and management of the 31,000 acres after joint fundraising efforts to pay off the loans are completed. This return is significant for many reasons, one of which being the demonstration of trust and good faith between a Native nation and conservation organization. The work is only beginning! Consider following TPL and check back in during the upcoming year when fundraising efforts begin 🌱
