A student film sharing the challenges womxn face in tech to educate, empower, and excite allies

About us

Culture of Code is a student team founded by Kellie Banzon, Gregory Chu, and Tanner Larson, Computer Science & Software Engineering seniors from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Our mission is to share the challenges that womxn face in the tech industry in order to educate, empower, and excite allies to make the field's culture more inclusive and supportive. We are currently creating a fictive short film featuring the journey of Siena, a recent female grad who takes a job at a male-dominated startup. Faced with an exclusive culture, Siena finds solidarity with a female coworker, helps her manager understand the problems with the team dynamics, and eventually gains his allyship to create a new supportive space for womxn at the company. Our work is unique in that it targets the majority group to motivate them to change. Rather than teach the minority to conform, our film employs emotional and empathetic appeal to educate the majority about the inequities of the workplace and spurs them to take an active role in shaping the culture of their workplaces.
