We are thrilled to introduce Dr. Nalu Navarro-Alvarez as the Scientific Program Director for the Total Human Eye-allotransplantation Innovation Advancement (THEIA) Project in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a groundbreaking initiative supported by a $46M grant from ARPA-H. Dr. Navarro-Alvarez received her Medical Degree from the University of Guadalajara in Mexico, followed by a PhD in regenerative medicine at Okayama University in Japan, where she conducted pioneering research in tissue repair and organ regeneration. She then completed a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard, where she focused on transplantation immunology, advancing the understanding of immune responses from cellular therapies to whole-organ transplantation. With over 15 years of experience in the field, she has made substantial contributions to both basic and translational research. Her exceptional expertise and visionary leadership will be pivotal in driving The THEIA Project toward transformative breakthroughs in transplantation science.

Meet Lynn Orfahli, MD, PGY-4, who grew up in numerous places, including Cleveland, Ohio. She completed medical school at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Orfahli wants to specialize in hand and lower extremity salvage and to take her lifelong passion for education forward into her career as a surgeon. In her free time, Orfahli enjoys climbing, swimming, failing at snowboarding, going to concerts and shows, hanging out with her dogs, traveling, jigsaw puzzles and reading (especially sci-fi). Fun fact: her first exposure to hand surgery was way back in her previous life as a working musician, when too much Liszt and too many bad habits caught up with her wrists.
