The "Angry Moms" group, based in Arizona, is doing groundbreaking work to remove barriers in getting the world's most effective antipsychotic medication, clozapine. Even though inexpensive generics are now available, only a tiny fraction of those with treatment-resistant disease get clozapine. One surprising reason: a strict Food and Drug Administration safety program designed to prevent rare but potentially fatal white blood cell side effects. The program requires blood test results to be uploaded as often as weekly to be able to get the drug at certain pharmacies. This forces patients and their families to wade through what one doctor calls a “logistical nightmare” to get refills. If something goes wrong at any step, patients can have their treatment interrupted. https://lnkd.in/gyrX7f7V
