Advancing knowledge of, appreciation for, and engagement with American Catholicism is our academic mission and passion.

About us

At the Curran Center, advancing knowledge of, appreciation for, and engagement with Catholicism in our U.S. context is our academic mission and our great passion. The Center today carries on the legacy of the generosity of Dr. John and Constance Curran and the vision of our founding director Fr. Mark Massa, SJ, who over a decade ago conceived of an interdisciplinary unit at Fordham dedicated to the historical and contemporary study of this rich and varied faith tradition and its manifold expressions in thought, practices, cultures, in literature and the arts, and engagement with pressing religious and social issues of our day. Our work at the Center promotes Fordham University’s Catholic, Jesuit mission by cultivating informed and lively engagement with Catholicism among our students and colleagues in the University, within the local and national academy and Church, and among the broader religious community and general public. Curran Center (CACS) activities include national conferences, public lectures, fora and readings, academic seminars and conversations, the creation and publication of scholarly and imaginative work, undergraduate and graduate courses, and—especially dear to our hearts—an intensive, undergraduate honors concentration in American Catholic Studies.

Join Us! The Search for God in Hip-Hop with Alex Nava Date: Tuesday, March 12th Time: 5:30 PM Location: Butler Commons (Duane Library) | Rose Hill Campus Though religion and hip-hop are often treated as if they are in conflict and at odds with each other, this lecture will consider the surprising moments of grace, beauty, and revelation that have pervaded hip-hop from its very beginning. Whether in the depth of the lyrics, or in the sounds and aesthetics at the surface, hip-hop has long wrestled with matters of the soul, making it the latest Black American invention that artfully integrates the sacred and the profane as it reacts to, and ruminates upon, questions of justice and suffering, joy and love, faith and hope. We hope to see you there! Free and open to the public. No registration is required.
