  • Beauty Through the Ages with D’on Beauty and self care rituals have been a part of human history for as long as it has been recorded! It is so important to not only take care of your skin, but to also feel beautiful in it. Today, D’on Cosmetics delves into history to uncover the practices used by our beauty besties of the past! Biblical Times In biblical times, beauty and self care was taken very seriously. Both men and women alike practiced similar rituals to maintain their beauty. Ash was used as an exfoliant, sloughing off dead skin while the nutrients of the ash nourished the skin. Myrrh oil was rubbed into the skin from head to toe to act as a perfume and moisturizer. Egyptian royalty was known to use pumice stones to scrub away dead skin cells, and the practice of using mare’s milk as a chemical exfoliant dates all the way back to Cleopatra’s reign! Medieval Times In the Middle Ages, beauty standards were intriguing yet perilous. Similar to modern times, women faced challenges like overplucked eyebrows. To enhance their brows, some glued rat fur to their faces! Another hazardous trend was applying lead powder as concealer, especially to mask smallpox scars. Mixing lead powder with egg whites created a foundation-like paste. For lip and cheek tints, crushing berries was the go-to method, relatively safer if one knew their berries well. Victorian Era The Victorian Era was a dangerous time for beauty standards. Pale skin and red lips were envied by women of this time - introduced to them by tuberculosis, the sickly pale look of the disease’s victims inspired many a bad decision regarding one’s health in pursuit of beauty. At this time, a dilated pupil portrayed meekness and a delicate sensibility. To achieve this look, women used belladonna drops in their eyes. Belladonna, also known as deadly nightshade, is one of the most toxic plants. Only a small amount is considered deadly when ingested, and the use of this plant in the eyes can cause irritation at best, and blindness at worst. Not even the perfumes of the Victorian Era were safe-many of them contained mercury. Mercury can be absorbed through the skin, causing mercury poisoning with regular use. The Roaring 20’s The Roaring 20s revolutionized beauty standards, introducing innovations like color-changing lipstick and cosmetic tattoos. Eyebrows were often completely shaved to emphasize the eyes, with eyeshadow blended up to the brow using darker shades like gray, black, or brown. "Spit black" mascara, applied with saliva from water-activated cakes, was a popular trend. Despite the emerging awareness of its risks, mercury remained a common ingredient in cosmetics of the era. From this time on, beauty standards have followed an ever-evolving trend based in self-liberty. Thankfully, many of our products today are much healthier and safer on our skin. Watching the beauty industry diversify has been a blessing at D’on Cosmetics, and we look forward to continuing the making of history!
