📍 Even when you do everything right, inaccurate utility maps can put lives at risk. A sobering story from NBC Boston highlights how a homeowner and her husband narrowly avoided tragedy after their properly planned excavation project encountered an unmarked electrical line. Despite following 811 Dig Safe protocols, outdated utility records failed to show critical underground infrastructure on their property. We commend the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities for their proactive oversight and commitment to strengthening damage prevention. Their emphasis on mandatory damage reporting and investigation of violations shows how regulators can drive positive change. But this incident underscores a crucial reality: We need better incentives for utilities to improve mapping accuracy and accessibility.
