In this episode of the DEP In-Basin Observations podcast, Bill talks to Rob Connors, creator of The Crude Chronicles, a Substack that delves into the intricate financial history of the oil and gas industry. For this episode, we are doing something a little different wherein we talk to Rob and reference a number of interesting charts that he has created. Also, in an effort to maintain brevity to the podcast, we didn’t go super deep into each slide during the discussion. Rob will also have a post this week with a link to the graphs (note the slides add context to Rob’s observations). In our conversation, we explore the correlation between historical cycles in the industry and some current trends. Next, the discussion delves into the concept of capital intensity cycles in oilfield services, as well as the potential for future oil prices and US production expectations. The original concept of the Daniel Energy Partners Permian Basin BBQ Cook-Off, Powered by Upright Digital, was to allow our Oil Service and Capital Equipment friends to cook for their clients, employees and industry friends. To add some spice to the Cook-Off, we adopted a competition framework whereby the BBQ would be judged by the E&P community (i.e., it’s always important to impress one’s customer). This concept has served us well. However, as part of our diversity efforts, we realized it was unfair to exclude E&P companies from cooking too, so gradually a transition developed and today, we are pleased to announce the following E&P companies will be taking the competition plunge: ConocoPhillips, Devon Energy, Diamondback Energy, Petro-Hunt L.L.C, VTX Energy Partners, LLC, SM Energy Company, Vital Energy, Permian Resources and Double Eagle Energy Holdings IV LLC. Admittedly, the ramp in E&P cooking teams is slow and perhaps this rate of adoption reflects a nervousness of losing to your vendors. Proper training, however, is a solution which is why I, along with Genaro Cibrián, a key member of the Upright Digital family, will offer a free BBQ cooking class to any interested E&P executive (space limited). Lastly, for our existing E&P cooking teams, be sure to bring your A game as we’ll make a special gift to the BBQ cookers for the highest rated E&P BBQ cooking team.
