Prices at the grocery store have you fried or scrambled? 🍳 I love the idea of everyday items influencing data visualization design. I also love food and eat a lot of eggs... In this Tableau infographic I've visualized the average price per dozen eggs since 1980 using Consumer Price Index data. Maybe the area chart represents an egg in the process of being scrambled. Maybe the radar chart represents an egg my 2-year old son dropped on the floor for fun. Haven't built a radar chart before? No fear. At SVA Data Analytics & Visualization, we frequently have requests to surface data in tables in Tableau, essentially giving people an Excel-like view of their data. When possible, I like to create a more visual-forward approach while still honoring the request. Shown below is an example design that leverages a heatmap that shows amounts by month and category, with two summary bar charts that provide additional aggregated information either by month (top) or sub-category (right). Our SVA Data Analytics & Visualization team at SVA Consulting has been creating visualizations using publicly available data. We use a mix of tools like Matillion, Snowflake, and/or Python to request data from APIs, and then we visualize it in Tableau or Power BI. Tableau's recent software release included Viz Extensions, one of which allows you to easily build a Sankey diagram. I thought I'd give it a try using some electricity data we pulled from the EIA. (It was also a fun excuse to use the Hue Circle color palette.) The visual below permits a user to select whether they want to see electricity sales or revenue data by Sector, Region, and State. The Sankey diagram creates visual links on how these metrics breakdown into attributes. You could easily replace this electricity data with any of your key data at your organization - to see how metrics breakdown based on specific attributes.
