Last week was WE Lead's winter quarter Mentoring Circle, where we invite 10 women leaders, entrepreneurs, and supportive advice-givers to campus for professional development conversations, career path advice, entrepreneurial pathway exploration, and more. Students and mentors join in conversation, all bringing something to the table and adding to the conversation. WE Lead also hosts a 1:1 mentoring program, which offers a different style of connection. 10 Mentors, 27 Students, and countless pieces of advice, professional journey tidbits, new connections, inspiration, and cookies later, I extend my gratitude and admiration to Nicole Doyle, Kathy Green, Helen Harmetz, Keisha Jackson, M.A., Joann Jen, Cindy Nie, Keona Moy, Maureen Sarewitz, Veronica S. Liberatory Practice Storytime 🕯️ #LiberatoryPractice365 #VirtuesAlignment #fairness I used Appwash a laundry payment app in September while traveling in Sweden with Pat Ocampo. There was a minimum cash load, but I only had to wash clothes once. They noted you could get a refund for unused funds. Excellent experience! "Hey Mama Geri, what's this got to do with liberatory practices?" Here's the kicker: I forgot to request a refund. This week they settled the account, returning the funds. This is a liberatory practice. They are proactively being fair! it was so weird, even though I saw the email notice earlier in the week, when resolving my business travel finances this morning I didn't recognize the goofy parent corp name and couldn't pinpoint them online. Being suspicious times i thought it was a scam until Visa pointed out it was a refund and tied it to the Sweden trip. They are the anti-scammers. It's "do unto others" in the wild. It's "prefer your sibling to yourself" in a fiscal policy. What's the status quo? 🤔They keep the money and if they hadn't offered refunds I would have agreed by using the tool. Because I'm a business, I write it off and feel like no harm has been done. Which means now I'm colluding in my own dupery, while normalizing extractive harm. It's not that hard to give up on extractive capitalism people. 😍🙏🏽 Imagine if we applied this type of thinking to every practice and policy? 🤯🌈🙌🏽 And even if this was not their intention, even if they're just covering their butts to avoid lawsuits, nonetheless it is up to the visionaries to point out what it looks like when we're doing it right. #learn2transform #justeconomy
