A great step toward justice for victims of image based sexual abuse.
“Take it Down Act” is a “Lifeline” for Victims of Deepfake Pornography, & Image-Based Sexual Abuse The National Center on Sexual Exploitation supports the Take it Down Act, introduced Wednesday, June 19, 2024, by Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), which criminalizes the act of uploading image-based sexual abuse and mandates its removal within 48 hours. For Dawn Hawkins' statement, see https://lnkd.in/emVt4ixd Extracts: "The ‘Take It Down Act’ is not just a legislative proposal; it’s a lifeline. IBSA is a brutal assault on dignity and privacy." “It’s outrageous that tech companies can instantly remove copyrighted material—upload a clip from Disney or a pop song, and it’s gone in a heartbeat, risking an immediate ban from the platform. Yet, if you upload a rape, hide a camera in a locker room, or want to destroy someone’s life by sharing private images, you can do so without scrutiny. The platforms won’t blink and the perpetrators can sleep easily, knowing they face no real consequences. Current legislative gaps allow both the platforms and the initial uploaders of this abuse to completely evade accountability." “This is a gut-wrenching double standard. As it stands today, the protection of corporate profit trumps the basic human dignity and safety of abuse survivors. We shouldn’t have to live in fear of our privacy being violated at any moment. We all could be victims." “The fight against IBSA is a fight for the dignity, privacy, and safety of all individuals. We must act swiftly and decisively to combat this insidious form of abuse. I urge everyone to support the Take It Down Act. This Act is a critical step toward finally giving victims a path to justice." “No more excuses, no more delays. It’s time to put people over profits. Together, we can ensure that every person has the right to live and love free from the threat of image-based sexual abuse.”

📢 Victims of violence need our help!📢 Federal funding for the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) has been cut by 40%, leaving Rhode Island with a $2M gap in victim services funding. More than 30 RI nonprofits (Sojourner House included) rely on VOCA funds to provide services like safe shelter, transitional housing, and clinical counseling to those in need. Without this aid, we risk an interruption to life-saving services and put the safety of tens of thousands of Rhode Islanders in jeopardy. We need RI legislators to secure $2M in emergency relief funding so that we can protect victim services and ensure there are no cuts to care. Can you help us advocate for this critical support? The more people speaking about the impact of these cuts, the more visible our efforts become. To amplify this message, we’re teaming up with the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence to host a “Protect RI Victim Services” Community Advocacy Day on Thursday, May 23rd. The event will take place at 3pm in the RI State House Library. We hope to see you there! Share this post to help us spread the word! Want to receive reminder about the event? Tonight, the Rhode Island Senate unanimously voted in favor of 2024-S 2767, introduced at the request of RI Treasury by Senator Pam Lauria. This legislation helps victims of sexual assault qualify for financial relief under the Crime Victim Compensation Program by allowing them to submit a medical forensic exam in lieu of a police report to satisfy program eligibility requirements. By breaking down this procedural hurdle, Treasury can help ensure this class of victims is given the financial support they need.
