The 4E Model outlines four core strategies to engage and empower citizens for a more sustainable future: 1️⃣ Enable – Make it easy and accessible for everyone to join. 2️⃣ Engage – Create a sense of purpose and collaboration within the community. 3️⃣ Exemplify – Lead by example; show the impact through real stories. 4️⃣ Encourage – Offer benefits and incentives that make participation worthwhile. Our colleague Laura Zabala from R2M Spain presented her research at the 4th IBPSA-Scotland uSIM Conference on November 25th, 2024, and received the 🏆 Best Paper Award on Theme Simulation! The paper, authored by Laura Zabala, Lucas Porto, Jesus Febres, and Raymond Sterling, is titled: "Optimizing Energy Communities Design and Sizing for Battery Operation and Energy Trading". This research introduces an innovative solution for Energy Community Design Optimization using: 🔹 Energy Trading Optimization Tool – to calculate optimal energy sharing coefficients.
 🔹 Battery Sizing Tool – to optimize battery sizing and operation. Applied to the La Balma Energy Community in Spain (a pilot site for the DE-RISK project), the study demonstrated:
 🌞 A renewable utilization increase from 45.42% to 68.66% with battery integration.
 💡 A detailed economic analysis of battery investments. This work showcases how energy communities can balance legislative requirements while enhancing renewable energy usage and economic feasibility.
