The Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC)

Oil and Gas

Decarbonizing the global oil and gas sector at speed and scale.

About us

The Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) aims to be an inclusive platform to support the Signatories in achieving the goals of the Charter. Building on the experience of the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) and others, the platform will accelerate knowledge sharing and foster collaboration with peers and partners, driving scalable actions that maximize impact. With its broad geographical reach, targeting producing nations in the Global North and South, the OGDC has the potential to deliver tangible outcomes in support of the world’s move to a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions future.

  • The OGDC is back for the new year! 🎆   In December 2023, the #OGDC brought together an unprecedented number of oil and gas companies to collaborate on the urgent task of decarbonizing the #energy system.  In its inaugural year, the Charter achieved key milestones:  ✔️ Establishing a robust governance structure                                                  ✔️ Rolling out the Collaborate & Share program, with tailored trainings, regional roundtables, a directory of technical support, and company-led webinars         ✔️ Launching a self-reported data collection exercise                       ✔️ Publishing the Baseline for Action report                                ✔️ Welcoming four new signatories: Vår Energi , PetroChina, Oil India Limited / ऑयल इंडिया लिमिटेड, & ORLEN S.A.   These achievements have laid the foundation for meaningful progress. Last year was pivotal in understanding the starting point and identifying the challenges this industry must overcome.    As we look ahead to 2025, our focus sharpens. 🎯 While the path forward is complex, one thing is clear: progress will require unwavering partnership, shared knowledge, and decisive action. Together, we will take the next steps toward a #sustainable energy future.  🌍   🎬 Hear more insights on this first year from the OGDC CEO champions here: https://lnkd.in/e9yBsSy4

Grateful and excited. As the year comes to an end and we finalize projects, it’s also a time to reflect on the progress we’ve made, the challenges we've overcome, and the partnerships that have driven real impact. This year, we’ve seen real progress in the decarbonization of the oil and gas sector, and I’m proud to share some of the milestones we’ve achieved at the The Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) We have now built a coalition of 55 of the largest companies in the world, with activities in 104 countries, covering 45% of the world's oil and gas production and 6700 fields. It is a truly inclusive effort, most of the companies are national companies from emerging countries in Asia, Central Asia and Middle East, Africa and South America. Plus our 12 OGCI (Oil and Gas Climate Initiative) members of course, which this year also marked a decade of climate action at scale. We in OGCI are proud to host the broader Charter. Combined the scale and reach is phenomenal. As is the purpose: to reduce overall emissions and in particular to bring upstream methane and flaring to near zero by 2030. A key climate action recognized by both COP and IPCC. This year we have built the OGDC platform, developed the Baseline for Action report at COP29, and rolled out  the Collaborate & Share program, we’ve taken bold steps toward building a more sustainable, inclusive energy future. But there’s still much more to be done, and I’m excited for what 2025 will bring as we continue to innovate, collaborate, and drive real change together. • This was great forum for discussion. Having candid conversations together to address what’s holding back the Global #Methane Pledge, tech and strategies to detect methane leaks, and how carbon markets can play a key role is necessary to help move the needle. 🎧 Tune in to hear Bjørn Otto Sverdrup, Chairman of our Executive Committee, chat with Henrique Bezerra of Global Methane Hub on Wood Mackenzie Energy Gang podcast hosted by Ed Crooks during #COP29. 🔗 https://okt.to/8m9gCi

  • "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." This powerful reflection was shared during our 8th and final webinar of 2024, hosted by Ian Joynes, Global Methane Lead from Woodside Energy. The engaging session provided valuable insights into climate strategy, with a particular focus on reducing operated methane emissions — a critical area for advancing climate action. A core component of the OGDC’s Collaborate & Share program is empowering signatories with free access to best practices, technical workshops, and peer-to-peer collaboration opportunities. Participation provides signatories invaluable knowledge and allows them to form meaningful partnerships to deploy new technologies and tackle shared challenges. As we look ahead to 2025, we’re excited to see the continued momentum and collective impact from all our signatory companies. A special thank you to all our signatories and webinar hosts this year. Together, we can go further 🌍💡 #ClimateAction #MethaneReduction #CollaborateAndShare

  • 👋 We're thrilled to see some new faces in our community. Welcome! You might be wondering what sets the OGDC apart from other important climate work being done? 💡In our inaugural year, we’ve turned a pledge into a global effort to decarbonize the energy sector. Established at COP28 and implemented by the OGCI (Oil and Gas Climate Initiative), the OGDC aims to rally the world’s NOCs and IOCs towards the same goals, making a positive collective contribution to meeting the climate challenge. 🌎 Today we have 55 signatory companies from 104 countries, representing nearly 45% of global oil production. We're making meaningful strides toward climate action across every continent. 🤝 At the OGDC we prioritize collaboration and inclusivity, partnering with companies at all stages of their decarbonization journey. 66% of our signatories are NOCs who are key players shaping both national economies and the future energy landscape. ⛓️What unites us all is a shared commitment to progress. Every signatory is working toward the aims set out in our charter: 🟢 Net-zero operations by 2050 🟢 Near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030 🟢 Zero routine flaring by 2030 🟢 Setting and sharing 2030 Scope 1 & 2 emissions ambitions ⚙️ Through our Collaborate & Share Program, signatories have free access to industry best practices, technical workshops, and tools to enhance measurement and reporting, to advance their decarbonization efforts. There is much more to do but together, we are uniquely positioned to drive meaningful change in global and regional energy transitions. Thank you for joining us on this transformative journey to decarbonize the industry! Stay tuned for what's coming in 2025! • Knowledge Sharing = Climate Action 🌍 Launched in 2024, the Collaborate & Share program is built on the belief that we are smarter when we work together. The program offers all signatories free access to a wealth of shared best practices, technical workshops, and opportunities for peer-to-peer collaboration through joint workshops, technology deployments, and partnerships. Signatories also gain access to training and tools that support the integration of advanced measurement techniques and data reporting, aligned with globally recognized environmental frameworks. Here's one example of Collaborate & Share in action: ONGC Videsh Ltd and TotalEnergies Partner to Eliminate Methane Emissions. As part of the Charter's commitment to sharing best practices, TotalEnergies has made its pioneering AUSEA technology available to national oil companies. This collaboration enables partners to carry out methane detection and measurement using drone campaigns directly on their assets. This year, TotalEnergies and ONGC signed a cooperation agreement to conduct drone-based methane detection at three ONGC-operated sites in 2025. This is a critical step towards ONGC’s efforts of achieving zero methane emissions by 2030. 💡 For more insights, check out the details on this and other case studies in our 2024 Baselining Report https://lnkd.in/gQta4iSQ #ClimateAction #Collaboration #MethaneReduction
