About us

Defense Media Activity keeps Department of Defense audiences around the world informed, collects and preserves the Department’s visual information records and trains the Department’s Public Affairs and Visual Information professionals. DMA is the DoD’s direct line of communication for news and information to U.S. forces deployed worldwide, on land, sea, and air. It presents news, information, and entertainment through media outlets, including radio, TV, Internet, print media, and emerging media technologies. DMA broadcasts radio and television to forces in 177 countries and 279 Navy ships at sea with Department-specific news and information programming. DMA is home to many brands recognized by the DoD and national audience to include Soldiers Magazine, Navy All Hands Magazine, Marines Magazine, Airmen Magazine, American Forces News Network, Joint Hometown News Service, Defense Information School, and the Defense Imagery Management Operations Center (Formerly Joint Combat Camera Center). DMA operates the editorially independent Stars and Stripes newspaper free from chain-of-command influence - a uniquely American institution among the worlds’ military forces. DMA supports its overseas service members via its Broadcast Center in Riverside, California, American Forces Network affiliates and Stars and Stripes reporters around the globe. DMA trains all of DoD’s Public Affairs and Visual Information professionals, military and civilian – nearly 3200 students per year. Finally, DMA serves the DoD and the American people by managing visual records (photos, videos and audio recordings) via the Defense Visual Information Records Center co-located with the Broadcast Center in Riverside, California. These records are collected, managed and offered to the National Archives to be preserved as the United States historical record of the Department of Defense and Military Services.

  • Friends, family, and team members from the Defense Media Activity gathered to honor Col. Christopher P. Karns, Director of Media Production and DMA Air Force Element Commander, for his retirement from the U.S. Air Force after an impressive 30 years of service to our Nation. A true embodiment of the Air Force core values—Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do—Col. Karns led with vision, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his team and the mission. His contributions shaped DMA and the broader Air Force public affairs community, leaving a legacy of professionalism. Surrounded by colleagues, friends, and loved ones, we gave Col. Karns the send-off he so richly deserved. As he hangs up his uniform, we thank him for his extraordinary service to the United States Air Force and the American people. We wish him all the best as he soars into his next chapter. No matter where he goes, we hope he continues to communicate, innovate, and inspire. • Defense Media Activity hosted the Defense Visual Information Steering Committee meeting, which brought together senior representatives from the US Army, US Navy, United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force, and United States Space Force, with virtual participation from the U.S. Space Command and US Transportation Command.   “Visual Information is a significant capability in the public affairs and warfighters’ efforts to provide trusted information to the military community, the public, and defend against mis- and disinformation,” said Acting DMA director Max D. Lederer, Jr.   The committee engaged in collaborative discussions, shared updates from each service, and worked together to address current challenges and shape the future of visual information across the Department of Defense. • Last week, we were thrilled to welcome graduate students from the Elliott School of International Affairs to the Defense Media Activity! Their visit to #DMA included a tour and discussions about the evolving world of military communication and media. Students had the opportunity to learn about how the Defense Information School equips defense communicators with the tools and strategies needed to tackle modern challenges, from countering disinformation to working with artificial intelligence, managing crisis communication, and effectively engaging diverse audiences. A highlight of the visit was speaking to the Chief Operating Officer, DMA HQ and the Director of the American Forces Network, where students learned about AFN's critical role in connecting service members and their families worldwide through reliable information and entertainment. Discussions delved into how #AFN adapts to modern challenges, maintaining cultural relevance across global audiences, and its strategies for keeping military communities informed and engaged. The exchange of ideas with these talented students showcased the importance of collaboration between defense organizations and the academic community. (📸 Photos by Sgt.
