For years, defined benefit (DB) pension plans have included real estate in their portfolios, viewing it as essential for diversification. Defined contribution (DC) plans are now catching up, recognizing real estate’s role in improving performance and reducing volatility, particularly in target date and white label funds. Most DC plans currently use publicly traded REITs for real estate exposure, unlike DB plans, which often blend these with private real estate. New advancements now make it easier for DC plans to adopt this combined approach, potentially enhancing long-term participant outcomes.
