Despite #INC5 not resulting in the global plastics treaty we were hoping for, we do not see this as a failure. We are encouraged by the overwhelming majority of countries that are calling for strong and mandated actions on the most critical elements needed for a meaningful agreement. Delterra is proud to be part of the Business For A Plastics Treaty and we are encouraged by momentum this group has developed and will carry forward to the next stage of negotiations. https://lnkd.in/dUfE_GNv

Real Change. At Scale
About us
Delterra is an environmental nonprofit on a mission to create a world where human activities protect and restore a healthy planet. Delterra’s founding partner is McKinsey & Company, and its flagship initiative, Rethinking Recycling, works with communities in emerging economies to build rapidly scalable, self-sustaining waste management and recycling ecosystems, that redirect waste into productive use while improving the lives of the people it touches. Rethinking Recycling is on track to bring recycling and waste management services to over 250,000 people in Indonesia and Argentina by 2022, most of whom had no access to recycling solutions before. Its programs have achieved recycling rates of up to 60%, which is higher than those of most US cities. To date, it has improved the livelihoods of more than 450 waste workers, many of whom are marginalized women. In the coming years, Delterra’s goal is to scale Rethinking Recycling to countries across Asia, Latin America and Africa, and add other programs to its portfolio with a view to develop innovative scalable solutions that redesign human systems for the good of people and the planet. As the UN plastics treaty negotiations move into their most challenging phase, here’s what stood out to me from observing the discussions and joining side events: - Alignment within the business community: global brands, retailers, and manufacturers are calling for an ambitious treaty and more harmonized regulations worldwide. The 260 members of Business For A Plastics Treaty have presented strong, unified messaging in support of this. - Global momentum: progress is being made globally to pave the way for tighter regulations. National plastic pacts are bringing stakeholders together to set clear, time-bound targets and work toward achieving them. Numerous NGOs including Delterra are leading innovative, on-the-ground efforts that are making a tangible difference. - Concerns about the effectiveness of environmental diplomacy: a large majority of countries, including the 67 members of the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution, are pushing for a bold treaty, while a few nations continue to prioritize economic interests. Considering this and reflecting on the outcomes of the biodiversity and climate COPs this year, it’s fair to question whether consensus-driven multilateral diplomacy can deliver the results we urgently need. A treaty has the power to create global rules for addressing plastic pollution and to amplify and accelerate the progress we’re already seeing. To be truly impactful, it must tackle the root issues of plastic and chemical production and establish clear producer responsibilities for managing pollution. This is a historic opportunity, let’s see how it unfolds over the next few days.

We’re at a critical point in the INC5 global plastic treaty negotiations. Most countries want an ambitious and meaningful agreement, so let’s give them the encouragement they need to get this over the line!

#INC5 🌏 The fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee opened today in the Republic of Korea. The opening plenary session began in #Busan, and excitement is high as delegates prepare to advocate for an ambitious treaty. UN Secretary-General António Guterres calls for a bold, credible, just and legally binding #PlasticsTreaty that aims to end plastic pollution, addresses the entire lifecycle of plastics, and ensures that no one is left behind—including waste pickers and the most vulnerable communities. Let’s connect at #INC5! Delterra’s Jeremy Douglas and Alina Jurcola are discussing key topics related to the #CircularEconomy #SystemsChange #Recycling #WasteManagement and much more!

We are launching a series of webinars in partnership with the Climate & Clean Air Coalition and with the support of the Global Methane Hub, under the theme: "Transforming Organic Waste Recovery at Scale in the Global South." 💻 In our first webinar, we explored the use of the black soldier fly technique for organic waste treatment in Latin America. Experts in the field shared valuable insights and hands-on experience. A big thank you to Melisa Soledad Wilkinson for your participation. Stay tuned for more sessions as we continue to explore transformative solutions for a sustainable future. 🌍

We’re excited to launch a series of webinars in partnership with Climate & Clean Air Coalition and with the support of Global Methane Hub under the theme: “Transformation to Scale Organics Recovery in the Global South.” 🥕 This initiative addresses the urgent issue of organic waste ending up in landfills, contributing to methane emissions—one of the most potent greenhouse gases. By exploring innovative techniques, we aim to reduce emissions and promote scalable solutions, particularly in regions where source separation is less common. 💻 In our first webinar, we explored the black soldier fly technique for organic waste treatment in Latin America. Hear from leading experts who shared valuable insights and hands-on experience. A big thank you to François Nolet for his expertise and inspiring contributions to this important conversation! Stay tuned for more sessions as we continue to explore transformative solutions for a sustainable future. 🌍 #methane #latinamerica #circulareconomy #globalsouth #blacksoldierfly #sustainability

🌏 Our proven behavior change approach is playing a key role in improving Bali's waste management systems. 🎓The Delterra team in #Indonesia, together with our collaborators and government partners, conducted large-scale education efforts with households, village leaders, and local businesses—reaching over 3,400 people. 🌱 Through consistent education and community engagement, we are witnessing firsthand how simple actions, like separating waste at the source, help improve waste management systems and prevent waste from polluting our environment. #behaviorchange #delterra #circulareconomy #systemschange #wastemanagement #recycling

Transforming #PETPackaging and #Textiles in the US ♻ A new study, published by Systemiq Ltd. with support from Closed Loop Partners, Eunomia and The Recycling Partnership, outlines a comprehensive roadmap to transition the US PET packaging and polyester textile industries: from the current linear, single-use model towards circular, low-waste and low-emission systems by 2040. 👉 Discover the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dcds-Ue5
Consumers in the United States discard over 100 billion PET bottles and over 10 billion polyester garments each year. Found in products ranging from food trays and active wear to carpets, PET and polyester account for 30% of the country’s plastic packaging and textiles use, contributing significantly to plastic waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Yet it also has high potential for circular economy approaches that reduce waste and emissions and create economic opportunities. 📢 Today, a new study published by #Systemiq with support from Closed Loop Partners, Eunomia Research & Consulting, and The Recycling Partnership presents a blueprint for transforming PET packaging and polyester textiles in the U.S. If current trends continue, PET/polyester consumption could grow 1.5 times by 2040, creating enough non-recycled waste to fill 750,000 garbage trucks annually and driving GHG emissions. ♻ The study highlights the potential of proven circular solutions – like reducing avoidable material use, scaling reuse, refill and resale, and expanding mechanical & depolymerization recycling – to deliver significant environmental and economic benefits by 2040: 📉 Reduce virgin PET/polyester consumption and waste sent to landfill and incineration by half ⬆️ Increase recycling rates for PET packaging to 70% (from 23%), and for polyester textiles to 19% (from 1%). 🌎 Cut projected GHG emissions for packaging by ~60% 💼 Transforming the PET packaging and polyester textiles industries could create 46,000 new U.S. jobs and generate $4.9 billion/year in additional revenue for U.S. recycling industries. Bold action from policymakers and industry is needed – such as enacting well-designed EPR laws in more states, scaling new recycling technologies, driving industry innovation, and increasing reuse and recycling. 👉 Discover the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eRWCG77C #CircularEconomy #Recycling #Sustainability #GreenJobs #Textiles #Plastics #ClimateAction #EPR
