About us

Democracy North Carolina (Democracy NC) works to strengthen democratic structures, build power in disenfranchised communities, and inspire confidence in a transformed political process that works for all. Through grassroots organizing, policy advocacy and research, and strategic communications, the nonpartisan organization aims to protect and advance voting access, ensure fair representation, and increase the participation of those historically underrepresented in the political process, especially people of color. For nearly 30 years, this 501(c)3 nonprofit (and its predecessor, Democracy South) has taken on powerful institutions and politicians, regardless of party, and promoted reforms that expand public involvement in civic life. Democracy NC works closely and in coalition with reform-minded local, state, and national partners to achieve the policy outcomes and grassroots participation necessary for a just and equitable democracy.

I want to thank NC Newsline for the opportunity to write an op-ed about the importance of addressing a critical gap in North Carolina’s public high school civics education. As we look ahead to the 2024 election, it's more important than ever to equip young people with the knowledge and tools to engage in our democracy. I'd also like to thank Democracy North Carolina for their support in writing this piece. The full piece is linked here if you're interested in reading: https://lnkd.in/eKnR_MU5

  • The NC Supreme Court continues to show its loyalty is not with the people, but with partisan interests. In spite of every attempt to dissuade them, North Carolinians will turn out to make their voices heard, and Democracy NC's volunteer Vote Protectors will be at the polls to make sure no eligible voter is turned away. Thank you Andrew McLear Ph.D. for the shout out! Learn more about becoming a Vote Protector in this election: demnc.co/voteprotector

Alert: I encourage every American who deeply cares about their right to vote, who believes in free and fair elections, and who wants their vote to be counted, to stand with the good people of North Carolina. Thank you, Mark Joseph Stern and Slate Magazine for highlighting this latest development. "The North Carolina Supreme Court tossed a grenade into the state’s election on Monday, violating both state and federal law to grant Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s cynical, last-minute removal from the ballot. Its 4–3 decision will compel election administrators to destroy nearly 3 million already-printed ballots that featured Kennedy’s name and redesign 2,348 different ballot styles across the state to accommodate the eleventh-hour change. This complex process will significantly delay the distribution of new ballots—which will, in turn, unlawfully abridge early voting for everyone while jeopardizing the voting rights of service members overseas in clear contradiction of federal statute." "Voters who requested an absentee ballot were, by law, entitled to get them mailed out by Sept. 6. Now these ballots cannot be mailed out for weeks. The ruling was so destabilizing that even Justice Richard Dietz, a conservative, felt moved to dissent, faulting the majority for failing “to follow the law as it is written.” Because minorities tend to vote early, the partisan justices' decision places their thumbs on the scale to restrict the voter's early access to the ballot box in favor of their candidate. For the good people of North Carolina: Do not be discouraged or dismayed. You have the power in your hands. If you haven't created a plan to vote, do it now - and help your neighbors, friends, and family to do the same. Reach out to organizations like Common Cause and Democracy North Carolina for help in making sure your voices are heard at the ballot box. Expect voting to be inconvenient because of the ruling but you can't afford to sit this one out! It's too important. You may have to stand in line for hours, but don't leave until you cast your vote. This election will be close and your vote matters, perhaps more than any other time in our nation's history. If it weren't so, the justices would have ruled differently. You got this, good people of North Carolina! The world is watching. 👇🏽

What an experience as a Second - Year Friendtern at Democracy North Carolina I have improved my leadership skills by building connections among teams, asking and providing feedback, oganizing team-building activities, and working closely with supervisors and interns. Also, I have committed to multitasking in cross-departmental work to contribute to my friendterns' experience. From innovative activities planning in partnership with Kendall Garraway and Ben Neill , to give capacity-building workshops about lobbying, in company with the master Carol Moreno Additionally, this organization gave me the opportunity to go to the NC General Assembly, and lobby with representatives about bills that affect youth and particularly for my interest, bills that directly impact immigrant and naturalized communities. More importantly, I have done research about naturalized communities entitled to vote in North Carolina and proposed my own project for Foreigners' participation in the general election. This Summer hits differently in many ways from 2023, but I am so happy it is because I have boosted my leadership and advocacy skills Thank you! Political Science and Structural Inequality Student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

It has been a while since I last shared an update on LinkedIn, but not for lack of work. Among other jobs and projects, working with the University Office for Diversity and Inclusion over the past year at UNC-Chapel Hill has been incredibly substantive and rewarding. However, it ended with equal frustration and disappointment due to the actions (and inaction) of the UNC administration, the Board of Trustees, and the Board of Governors. This summer, I have had the distinct pleasure of returning to Democracy North Carolina as a second-year intern to mentor the 25th class of interns and continue to advocate for voting rights across North Carolina. Below is a snippet from a speech I gave at a press conference outside the North Carolina General Assembly at the end of June, highlighting the hypocrisy and anti-democratic actions of many within the NCGA. Through my work with DemNC, I have spoken with lawmakers and advocated for policies that strengthen the voices of all North Carolinians and protect their right to vote. I hope that those in office and those soon to be in office will not only promote pro-democracy and pro-justice legislation but also appoint individuals who value the diversity of student voices and identities and the continual pursuit of progress. As part of this effort, I am raising money to bring back to Chapel Hill for voter outreach and civic engagement efforts in the fall. My goal is to embolden students to vote and equip them with the information they need to do so. If you would like to support this work, you can contribute to our Democracy Summer Mini-Grant Campaign at: https://lnkd.in/eK8kuwBS. I appreciate your support and I look forward to continuing this work in the fall.

N&O Published Political Writer + Advocate for Social Justice | UNC Greensboro

We took the Dem NC friendterns to the NCGA!!! One of my favorite parts of my 1st year with Democracy North Carolina was Advocacy day; that is, the day where I got the chance to go to the NC General Assembly and engage lawmakers in discussions about the current state of local and state government. Ironically, last year I was terrified- terrified to sound uninformed and underprepared. Terrified to start a conversation and not be able to handle the outcome. Terrified to make an irreversible social faux pas and be forced to consider a new career. This year, it felt like a coming home experience; one where I was in the priviliged position of facilitating conversations between first years and lawmakers, encouraging them between meetings, and advocating for them in tough spots- and as I did this, I realized I was smiling all the way through. It was with great pleasure that I joined this year's cohort of shining stars, as they developed their identities as active citizens and community leaders; and the celebration we had afterward was a close second to witnessing their success in the moment. First years- thank you for letting me witness your growth. Lets make these next 4 weeks count! #ofbyandforthepeople

    Junior @ North Carolina A&T State University | B.A. Liberal Studies (Pre-law)

Hello everyone! Last Wednesday, I had the absolute honor and pleasure to speak in front of the North Carolina General Assembly Legislative Building during Democracy North Carolina's Advocacy Day. At this press conference, I got the chance to speak about HB 237, the Anti-Protest and Anti-Mask bill. My goal was and still is to urge lawmakers to sustain the veto on this bill. Listed below is a written version of my speech. _____________________________________________________________ “Good morning, my name is Skylar McCormick and I am a rising junior, Liberal Studies (Pre-law) student from Cabarrus County, North Carolina. I am currently enrolled at the largest HBCU in the country, THEE North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. This summer I have the wonderful opportunity to work as an organizing intern at Democracy North Carolina. As an organizing intern, I have learned the need to advocate for a just democracy for all. As we say, at Dem NC we strive for a just democracy of, by, and for the people. With this being said, I am here today to express some of my concerns regarding HB 237. If you are not familiar with HB 237, this bill not only infringes upon people’s First Amendment right to freedom of speech but most importantly infringes upon people with medical conditions ultimately putting their livelihood in danger. If HB 237 becomes law this would allow people wearing masks for protesting, medical conditions, and/or personal reasons to be prosecuted under state law. The elimination of this bill is very near and dear to my heart. My 80-year-old grandfather suffers from asthma and type 3 kidney disease and would be negatively affected if this bill is pushed through. Underrepresented and underserved groups of people similar to my grandfather…well beings will be at risk. No one should have legal action taken upon them, for simply protecting and prioritizing their health. Lastly, I would like to leave you all with a quote to further emphasize my point. As Elie Wiesel once said, “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” I speak for Democracy North Carolina and myself to NOT override this veto. Thank you I will now pass it on to my fellow intern Destiny to further discuss this issue.” _____________________________________________________________
