DENSE (Dependable Smart Energy Systems) is a 4-year Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions-Doctoral Network (HORIZON-TMA-MSCA-DN) funded within the framework of the HORIZON EUROPE Programme. It brings together 10 partners from applied research, academia and industry in 6 different countries with the aim of implementing 12 doctoral research projects.

🌍🔌 Thrilled to announce that our research paper, titled “Comparison of Fast Frequency Response Methods in the Low-Inertia Grid of Cyprus”, on addressing frequency security issues in modern electric power systems has been published! In our study, we tackle the challenges posed by high penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) and the associated frequency security problems. The transition to low-inertia systems results in reduced support due to the fewer synchronous generators and RES lacking the capability to assist in frequency stabilization. To combat these challenges, we explored Fast Frequency Reserves (FFR) as a solution to enhance frequency support in these dynamics. Our paper presents, analyzes, implements, and compares five FFR controllers, showcasing their effectiveness in mitigating the Rate of Change of Frequency, Nadir, and steady-state frequency issues post-event. 📢 Exciting News! I’m delighted to share that our research paper, which we presented this June, is now officially published and available online! You can explore it here: https://lnkd.in/dJV4AUka This paper delves into the utilize of fast frequency response (FFR) schemes for reducing curtailments within a low inertia power systems, a crucial step toward enhancing grid stability and integrating renewable energy sources. Then, the impact of FFR on the Nadir and its ability to alleviate RES curtailment problems it analyses. The low-inertia, islanded, Cyprus dynamic model is used to quantify the results and showcase the impact on a real system. This work is the result of incredible teamwork, and I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to co-authors, Petros Aristidou, Antonis Lazari, and Vrahimis Koutsolouka for their invaluable contributions, insights, and collaboration throughout this journey. I am thrilled to announce that I have recently embarked on a new journey as a PhD candidate within the DENSE - Dependable Smart Energy Systems - Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network - Doctoral Network! 🎉 This PhD is a natural progression of my academic and professional path, which began with a Master's degree in Automatic Control from Lund University. My research focuses on “Predictive Hierarchical Control for Integrated Electric-Hydrogen Systems”, a collaboration with Fraunhofer IEG, where I have the privilege of working closely with experts such as Dr. Anton Plietzsch and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johannes Schiffer. Green hydrogen plays a critical role in the European Green Deal and is pivotal for the energy transition. I am excited to contribute to this transformative field. My project centers on developing innovative control strategies to optimize the operation of integrated hydrogen and electricity networks, aiming to support large-scale decarbonization. By leveraging advanced predictive modeling and optimization techniques, I seek to design scalable, efficient solutions for dynamic, cross-national energy systems that combine the flexibility of hydrogen with the reliability of electricity grids. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be part of such an inspiring community of researchers who share my passion for solving complex challenges through mathematics, technology, and innovation. As 2024 comes to a close, I’m reflecting on what has truly been a transformative year for my career and future aspirations. The year began with an incredible collaboration between the Lebanese American University and INSA Strasbourg. My deepest gratitude goes to Dr. Nagham El Ghossein and Dr. Tedjani Mesbahi for making this opportunity possible. During my time in Strasbourg, I was proud to contribute to the ENERGETIC Project, focusing on electrical energy storage systems, particularly sodium-ion batteries. To crown this experience, our efforts culminated in a conference paper presented at IEEE VPPC 2024 in Washington, DC. A few months later, I embarked on a new and exciting chapter: joining The University of Manchester as a PhD student as part of the DENSE - Dependable Smart Energy Systems - Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network. I am deeply thankful to Prof. Alessandra Parisio for her unwavering support and guidance. As I look forward to the opportunities ahead, I am eager to learn, grow, and contribute to this exceptional team while pursuing innovative research in the field of energy systems and control.
