NYC’s large buildings continue to show reductions in their energy use, according to our latest analysis of the city’s 2023 energy and water use data. Our research shows: ⚡ Site energy use dropped among large buildings (25,000+ sq. ft.) for the fifth consecutive year. 🌆 92% of large buildings are estimated to comply with the 2024 carbon limits set by Local Law 97. Overall, site energy use has fallen 15% and emissions 26% since 2010. Team DOB was in the Bronx earlier this week, where we held an information session with staffers for elected officials, Community Board mangers, and other community leaders to discuss critical buildings-related topics that affect their constituents.   During our visit, we provided guidance and answered questions on upcoming parapet observation and gas piping inspection deadlines, helping attendees better understand these important regulations impacting their districts so that they in turn can better arm their constituents with this important knowledge.   DOB is holding these seminars in all five boroughs, to demystify city codes and promote safety in our communities. 

The December 31 deadline for building owners to complete their parapet inspections is fast approaching. But don’t worry! This new, annual inspection requirement is easy and can be completed by a handyman, building superintendent, or any other competent individual. This requirement is intended to help property owners identify if their building is in need of repair, so that they can proactively address the issue before it becomes a bigger, and more expensive, problem. Members of DOB's Sustainability Bureau visited a newly constructed project at 555 Greenwich Street in the Hudson Square neighborhood of Manhattan to learn about how the building's geothermal heating and cooling systems are helping NYC make a clean energy transition. Site visits and public outreach are an important component of the agency's sustainability work, as New York City works to curtail harmful carbon emissions from our built environment.
