Resolving today’s transnational crises requires a global perspective that unites pioneering research with a foundational understanding of economics, politics, and governance. In SIS’s Department of Politics, Governance, and Economics (PGE), our faculty of political scientists, economists, and top regional specialists investigate longstanding and emerging questions related to power, identity, and institutions. Our courses train students with the foundational knowledge and data analysis skills to resolve pressing international, regional, and local issues—from democratic backsliding and trade competition to humanitarian assistance, state building, and financial cooperation. Our students contribute to innovative policy and practice and graduate prepared for immediate placement in impactful careers in international organizations, government, nonprofit organizations, and private corporations. The most important international affairs questions are often the hardest ones. In Politics, Governance and Economics we embrace the challenge. This week, Professor Keith Darden, a scholar of nationalism, identity and state building gave a lecture on Israel's conduct in the war in Gaza, drawing on law, imperial histories, and humanitarian data to argue that it does not amount to genocide. A robust debate can stimulate inspired learning.

Great to host Thea Lee from the US Department of Labor for a talk on "Practical Ways to Reduce Poverty." Thanks to Prof. Steve Silvia (check out his class next year on using comics to understand IR!) Historical insights on the evolution of trade as a tool for advancing workers' rights, starting with NAFTA -- and recalling the weakness of those side agreements. The labor agreements got stronger, though it was hard to see the incremental progress in each trade agreement at the time (during her years at AFL-CIO). They are now part of almost every trade agreement. Workers can now take action against a factory that violated their rights; no longer do you need to demand sanctions against an entire sector.
Last month, several PGE students attended the IMF & World Bank meetings held here in Washington DC. They had a chance to engage with current debates and tomorrow's policymaking just a short distance from AU's campus. PGE Students have great opportunities to be in the nexus of politics, governance, and economics while at SIS! #internationaleducation

International organizations are increasingly being asked to work with other actors, but little is known about how these relationships work. My new article, with Rasmus Heltberg, explains how to better design and evaluate them. We -conceptualize terms that are often used interchangeably--collaboration, partnership, coordination, cooperation, and convening; - propose an analytical framework for evaluating and researching IO collaborative relationships; - argue that performance measurement should be complemented with attention to relationship management; - and highlight that flexible design and attention to collaborative processes can lead to stronger inter-organizational partnerships. https://lnkd.in/edqKgdrx
