Last month, I had the privilege of presenting the EarthDaily Constellation at the 2024 Advancing Earth Observation Forum in Adelaide. A heartfelt thank you to Sebastian Robertson and the Earth Observation Australia Inc team for orchestrating a productive and enjoyable event that showcased Australia's unique position in global Earth observation. Three powerful themes emerged, highlighting Australia's leadership: 1. World-Class Validation Capabilities Australia's calibration and validation infrastructure, particularly through Geoscience Australia, sets a global benchmark. EarthDaily Analytics is excited about the potential this world-leading expertise brings to scientific Earth observation missions like ours. 2. Standards Leadership & International Collaboration George Dyke from Symbios shared compelling insights on Analysis Ready Data (ARD) standards—a critical foundation for Australia's ambitious partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on Landsat Next. This $207.4 million commitment, including enhanced ground station capabilities in Alice Springs, demonstrates Australia's strategic investment in EO infrastructure. EarthDaily's commitment to CEOS ARD certification will complement these national capabilities. 3. Research-Industry Integration Australia's strength lies in bridging world-class research with commercial applications, as highlighted in the forum's closing remarks. Initiatives like AquaWatch and Digital Earth Australia exemplify effective collaboration between government, research institutions, and industry. Australia faces unique challenges—monitoring the world's third-largest Exclusive Economic Zone, managing a 35,000 km coastline, and addressing pressing environmental and resource management needs. The robust discussions at AEO2024 demonstrated how EO, underpinned by rigorous standards and quality assurance, can address these challenges. Grateful to Anthony Rea and the organizing committee for fostering such meaningful dialogue. A productive week in Canberra for EarthDaily Analytics, where I was joined by my colleague Peter Round, VP of Defence & Intelligence, at MilCIS 2024. Engaging discussions with Australian Space Command and defence leadership underscored the growing importance of persistent Earth observation in the Indo-Pacific region. Our Everywhere, Everyday™ approach to global monitoring resonated strongly during our presentations in support of regional security objectives. Beyond MilCIS, we continued strengthening relationships with our Australian partners. Always a pleasure to meet with the team at Geoscience Australia, their world-class expertise and facilities continue to impress. I recently presented EarthDaily Analytics' vision at the CEOS (Committee on Earth Observation Satellites) LSI-VC meeting in Canberra, joining Earth Observation experts from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, European Space Agency - ESA, JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other government agencies to discuss standardization of satellite imagery from different sources. Hosted at Geoscience Australia's impressive facility, the experience was particularly special - not every day you get to touch a piece of the moon collected during the Apollo 17 mission! The key focus was Analysis Ready Data (ARD) - satellite data that's processed to allow immediate analysis without additional complex processing steps. This standardization is becoming crucial as the Earth observation industry expands rapidly. With an overwhelming choice for buyers, time spent navigating complexity slows down innovation. Standards like CEOS-ARD are vital in reducing this complexity and removing uncertainty for data users - something EarthDaily is deeply committed to supporting. Shared our roadmap for the EarthDaily Constellation (launching in 2025) and its capability to deliver daily, scientific-quality ARD to support change detection and AI applications at scale. The response from these key agencies was incredibly encouraging. Special thanks to Matt Steventon and George Dyke for facilitating our involvement, and to Timothy Stryker for his support and encouragment.
