🌍 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐀𝐅 𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐎 🌱 As part of the GALILEO EU-AU project project (2025-2028), funded by the EU through Horizon Europe (€6.1M), researchers are working on innovative agroforestry systems that integrate trees, crops, and livestock to enhance rural communities’ resilience to climate change in Africa. During a visit to Senegal, INRAE - coordinator of DigitAF - visited an agroecological farm applying these principles in real-world conditions. This was an opportunity to observe interactions between trees and crops in agroforestry and to discuss with the farmer about the social conditions related to land tenure necessary for agroforestry adoption. In this project, researchers plan to adapt the 𝐇𝐢-𝐬𝐀𝐅𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 - a key model also included in DigitAF - to simulate 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐝𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐢𝐝𝐚-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬. 🌿 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫? These studies contribute to a deeper understanding of tree-crop interactions allowing to assess adaptation of innovative agroforestry systems to climate change, paving the way for more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. 📸 Check out the photos of the agroecological farm below 👇 #Agroforestry #DigitAF #GALILEO #ClimateResilience #HorizonEurope #SustainableSystems

Digital tools to boost Agroforestry in Europe to meet climate, biodiversity and farming sustainability goals.
About us
DigitAF is a project funded by the European Union (within the Horizon Europe Framework Programme - Research and Innovation Actions) and it develops digital tools to boost agroforestry in Europe to meet climate, biodiversity and farming sustainability goals. DigitAF wants to create a legacy for future scientists, stakeholders, farmers, students and communities. DigitAF aims to develop an ecosystem of open-source, user-centred digital tools to facilitate change and adapt the practices of key actors toward adopting agroforestry. Six Living Labs across six countries in the EU (Italy, Germany, Netherlands, UK, Finland and Czech Republic) will be implemented. DigitAF consortium brings together 26 partners plus 5 affiliated entities and 19 countries are involved (including 4 associated countries).

𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 = 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 🐄🌽 + 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 🌲🌳 Agroforestry is the integration of wood perennials 🪵, such as trees and shrubs, with crops or livestock in farming systems. Agroforestry refers to nature as a “dynamic system” ⚙️ that needs human action to maximize efforts to mitigate climate change and protect natural resources. In an agroforestry system, there are both ecological and economical interactions between the different components leading to increased benefits for land users at all levels: ↗️ increased resilience and biodiversity on one hand, ↗️ enhanced profitability and production on the other.
