Digital Ag Innovation Lab

A couple of weeks ago I got the opportunity to travel to Brazil for my role with the Digital Ag Innovation Lab, along with a few colleagues from John Deere. We were there to investigate and attempt to address some issues with performance on machines in Brazil's unique terrain and landscapes. It was their peak spray season, so there was no shortage of time riding around in the "buddy" seat of a sprayer. By traveling there, we got to see the real-life situations these operators are putting the machines in. This is something that data from the field just cannot replicate. I believe we were able to have a positive impact while visiting and came back with more knowledge than we ever could have imagined. While driving around to machines, we were also able to see some amazing countryside. Brazil is beautiful its own way that is hard to describe, I hope my pictures do it some justice. The food was quite good as well and I even managed to pick up on some Portuguese while there. All in all, it was a productive work trip and an even better experience for a "farm kid" from Iowa to see more than just what the Midwest has to offer.

Planter University 2025 is officially in the book as of Tuesday. I am extremely grateful to once again be involved in an amazing program that impacts so many growers and companies around the state year after year. 6 events in 9 days makes for a long couple of weeks, but the interactions with growers and seeing the results of our work, makes it all worth the long weeks! 😃 I am also extremely excited to officially launch a brand new website, Digital Ag Innovation Lab Research to Rows, that I started on a little over 6 months ago to replace the original Digital Ag Monitor Guide as well as supply more resources for farmers surrounding Planters, Applicators, and Harvesters. My vision for this website is that it will be home to resources that will help grower around the State of Iowa make informed decisions on their operations. I encourage you to check out the website linked below. As I noted earlier this website is in its early stages and a long ways from the finish line. Big congratulations to Bailey Hadacek for defending his MS degree today in the Iowa State University Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. Bailey is an outstanding member of the Digital Ag Innovation Lab and in addition to a great technical presentation he was showing off some creative drone skills on that last discussion slide. Nice work Bailey!

I’m excited to share that I started my assistantship with the Digital Ag Innovation Lab this summer as part of my master’s program in Agricultural Engineering at Iowa State University. My research is focused on computer vision and machine learning in agricultural applications. Recently, I had the chance to visit Arkansas for field testing and data collection. It was an awesome experience to see our system in action and explore cotton, ginning, rice, and peanuts. I’ve discovered a newfound appreciation for all crops, not just the familiar Midwest corn and soybeans! 🥜
