What a great opportunity last night at Quinnipiac University College of Arts & Sciences to hear from State Representative Kate C. Farrar and Jennifer Tolman of Dignity Grows, Inc. at the "Dignity in Flow: Confronting Period Poverty" event hosted by Catherine Richards Solomon and the incredible QU Sociology Club members! The room was so full that more chairs had to be brought in, and students helped pack 150 totes with hygiene products to support those in need. We learned about the newly passed menstrual equity law in CT that Rep. Farrar proposed, and the extent of period poverty in the US and CT in particular. When students and classrooms are equipped with supplies, children have what they need to learn, grow and achieve developmental and academic milestones. Today’s Back to School drive in partnership with The Village for Families & Children and the important work of Dignity Grows, Inc. is one way our United Way is closing gaps in education so local children have equitable opportunities to succeed in school and beyond. Today, I had the honor of attending my second packing palooza with Dignity Grows, Inc.! They have been a tremendous and impactful partner with Our Piece of the Pie and had me briefly speak on the impact I’ve seen when our OPP youth receive their hygiene totes. I brought a few of my loved ones to participate and today’s group ended up assembling about 1200 totes! Access to hygiene and menstrual products is an often overlooked necessity; I’m so proud to stand by an amazing organization and group of community providers & volunteers to eliminate those barriers!
