This article has a special place in my heart. It took 5 months of back-and-forth. Explaining the identity-first language and why it is important to the community. Explaining why trying to change autistic people is not a solution to autism exclusion at work. Explaining that the mainstream society and culture have traditionally portrayed autistic people in very, very warped ways. Writing an HBR article from an autistic lived experience perspective was not something that was done before. The dominant form of mainstream "autism coverage" was a sob story/inspiration porn. And no, I was not conforming to that genre. Going against the mainstream narrative is a lot like swimming upstream in a powerful river. Or trying to change the direction of the river. I cried a lot while writing this article. I wanted to give up, only I could not give up. This article had to be written, and it had to be written from the actual lived experience perspective, not the mainstream media perspective. Things changed since then. The mainstream current is still there, but the lived experience current is much stronger, and the identity-first language is much more common. Whew. Things are not perfect. Autistic people still struggle with misunderstanding, arbitrary hiring demands, sensory painful work environments, and with #management and #HumanResources systems that take advantage of our loyalty but offer no loyalty back. But there are more companies developing skills-based hiring approaches and creating healthier work environments. There is a better understanding of neurodivergent #careers, job matching, job crafting, and yes, neurodivergent #leadership. There is more societal understanding of #neurodiversity #inclusion. And there is The Canary Code, pecking away at exclusionary systems. But this article had to come first. And it had to use the identity-first language and a systemic perspective. https://lnkd.in/gciA8-CM #Autistic #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD
