Are you managing your team through "presenteeism"? The belief that the only way you believe your employees are working is if you can see them? This is a common misperception that does not serve managers and leaders or their teams well in today's evolved workplace of diverse talent and generations. Also included in beliefs that need to head to the "delete folder" are: Mistaken belief: Culture is place. (Truth: It's the behaviors, values, and customs you have that express your purpose and values, though the physical aspects can reinforce them). Mistaken belief: The only way to productively work, have engagement, and foster innovation is working together in the physical workplace. (Truth: People are more productive when they can channel their energies according to what fits into their full lives and are supported by managers and leaders who have created a culture and support system for today's technology-enabled times). In reading Manar Morales's excellent book, The Flexibility Paradigm: Humanizing the Workplace for Productivity, Profitability, and Possibility, and then having her on my Working on Purpose podcast to talk about it, I was dazzled by all the research she's packed into her book, like: * Citing from the 2022 Future Forum survey: 68% of knowledge workers prefer hybrid work arrangements, 78% want location flexibility, and 95% want schedule flexibility. Manar says that just as 9/11 forever changed how we travel, COVID-19 forever changed how we work. The answer for today's evolved times is "holistic flexibility": "a complete and integrated approach to working that meets organizational and employee needs in a way that produces a healthy culture employee loyalty and productivity, and a profitable bottom line. Holistic flexibility includes not only WHERE you work but also WHEN and HOW long you work. That's a form of de-parented, degendered, and de-stigmatized flexibility."
