When DNA or dental records fall short, advanced methods like craniofacial superimposition offer hope. This technique overlays a photo of a missing individual onto an image of a recovered skull to assess anatomical congruence. 🧬🦴 Associate Professor Carl N. Stephan, a #ForensicAnthropologist from the University of Queensland (UQ), has significantly advanced this field. His research refines methods like estimating photo-to-camera distances and applying standardized soft tissue thickness measurements, improving identification precision. In collaboration with #DPAA, Dr. Stephan and a UQ PhD student recently applied these methods to two cases at DPAA’s Hawaii lab. Their analyses produced strong matches—evidence that may soon lead to positive identifications. This partnership underscores DPAA’s commitment to leveraging global expertise, including UQ’s contributions to forensic research and recovery efforts in places like Papua New Guinea. Together, we honor the promise to account for our missing personnel. https://lnkd.in/d8cET684 #NeverForgotten🎗️#OurPromise #Research🔍 #Recover⛏️ #Identify🧬
