For the past six years, Jana W., Outpatient/Access Supervisor, has been a force for change at Starfish Family Services. She is committed to breaking barriers, promoting understanding, and ensuring that every voice is heard. For Jana, Black History Month is a time to “promote education, show appreciation, and celebrate Black history—not just this month, but every month.” She believes in recognizing the achievements of Black individuals while also acknowledging the work that still needs to be done. Her mission? “To change the narrative, break down barriers like ignorance and fear, and help others recognize what makes us unique, as well as what binds us together.” Jana’s advice for future leaders: “Use your voice, advocate, practice empathy, embrace change, be a village, and keep faith.” At Starfish, we are grateful for leaders like Jana who inspire growth, opportunities, and unity. At Starfish Family Services, we believe in honoring the voices and experiences that shape our community. Today, we celebrate James Oakes, who has been making an impact here at Starfish as a dedicated supervisor. For James, Black History Month is a time to “reflect on the past, see the growth, and look to the future.” A lesson he carries from his family is the importance of helping others, inspired by his father’s words: “Treat people how you would want to be treated and help when you can, because one day, you might be the one in need.” James finds inspiration in his uncle, Robert Lothery, an original Harlem Globetrotter. His uncle’s influence shaped James’ values of hard work, mentorship, and the hands-on approach he brings to his life and career. His advice for future leaders? “Don’t forget the past, learn from your mistakes, and be thankful for what you have.” As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor the wisdom, resilience, and leadership of individuals like James, who remind us that diversity strengthens us all. #BlackHistoryMonth #StarfishSpotlight #AuthenticLeadership #OneStarfish

As the Manager of Clinical Services at Starfish Family Services, Margo Hill is a passionate advocate for mental and behavioral health—working to erase stigma and uplift those in need. Nearly eight years into her journey with Starfish, she continues to inspire those around her with her leadership and dedication. For Margo, Black History Month is a time to celebrate “the invaluable contributions of Black people to American society” and to recognize how Black history unites us all. She draws inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose unwavering fight for justice and opportunities for all mirrors her commitment to advocating for underserved communities through mental health services. “His messages of hope, change, and justice speak volumes,” Margo shares. Her advice to future leaders? “Embrace the power of your identity. Know your talents and passions, and use them to make a positive impact.” We are grateful for Margo’s leadership and the difference she makes every day! Join us in celebrating her and all the Black leaders who continue to inspire change. #BlackHistoryMonth #Leaders #MentalHealthAdvocate #OneStarfish

At Starfish Family Services, we are honored to celebrate the voices and contributions of our incredible staff—like Angela Burgess, who has been making an impact for nearly 11 years! As our Internship Program Manager, Angela is passionate about fostering opportunity. As we celebrate Black History Month, Angela shares what this time means to her: “Black History Month is a time to honor the invaluable contributions of African Americans, to celebrate resilience, and to stand unapologetically in our identity.” Inspired by the wisdom of Iyanla Vanzant, whose teachings on healing and authenticity influence her own approach to mentorship and leadership. Her advice? “Embrace your authentic self. Your unique perspective is a strength that can inspire change.” Join us in celebrating Angela and the incredible impact of Black leaders, past and present, this month and beyond! #BlackHistoryMonth #StarfishSpotlight #AuthenticLeadership #OneStarfish

This week, we joined hundreds of Head Start providers from 48 states in Washington, D.C. for the National Head Start Association Leadership Conference. At this annual conference, providers learn about advocacy and spend time meeting with elected officials. Head Start not only helps young children but also supports working families and the economy. We are thankful to Senator Elissa Slotkin and Senator Gary Peters for taking the time to listen and we are proud to continue serving children and families through Head Start. #EarlyEducation #HeadStart #OneStarfish

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose dream began with a powerful vision for our children—a world where they are seen for their character, not the color of their skin. This vision continues to inspire us every day at Starfish Family Services. Through our early education and behavioral health programs, we are committed to creating opportunities for children and families to thrive—removing barriers, nurturing potential, and fostering a sense of belonging. Dr. King’s words remind us that change starts with each of us, in our homes, workplaces, and communities. Let’s honor his legacy by taking action—mentoring a child, advocating for equity, or showing kindness in small but meaningful ways. Together, we can build the brighter, more inclusive future Dr. King dreamed of. How will you embody Dr. King’s dream today? Share your thoughts below! #MLKDay #EquityInAction #OneStarfish #BuildingCommunity #DiversityInAction
